Oath Keepers - Who Are They and Your Opinion?

Does anyone know anything about this group? If you reference what the mainstream media says (Color me skeptical), they are a hate group, and many of them say anti-government as well, etc. From what I have read I’m not seeing that either claims are correct. Does anyone know anything about this group or have an opinion about them and what they do?

I saw that they are going to El Paso to help protect ICE, provide training, etc: https://oathkeepers.org/2019/08/oath-keepers-call-to-action-el-paso-tx-sept-1-10-offer-ice-families-protection-from-antifa/

I remember they were in Ferguson a few years ago: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-33867245

I’m not exactly sure what to think about these folks. Should armed citizens roger up and assist in this manner, and as they did in Ferguson as well? I’m curious what you all think.

I did a quick look at their website and saw the Southern Poverty Law Center’s observations of the group. I did not see anything on their site that would make them appear to be radical or anti-government any more than the claims that the NRA is a terrorist organization.

Oathkeepers is an org of LEO and military and retired or former LEO and military. Their primary principles basically say they will honor their oath to protect and defend the US constitution and the citizens of the US against all enemies foreign or domestic, and that if given unconstitutional orders, such as disarming citizens, they will not obey them.

Basically they commit to honor their oaths over orders.

If you are not leo/military you can join as an auxiliary member but not a full member.

Not a hate group.
Unless, maybe you plan on giving these folks unconstitutional or illegal orders or asking them to turn on other citizens and separate those citizens from their rights. If you had those kind of plans, you might want to label them as a hate group.

Also, they tend to show up in places where citizens are at risk, such as Ferguson, and stand defense. IIRC they stood with shop owners in Ferguson to defend their shops against looters and rioters. Also IIRC the oathkeepers were mostly white and the neighborhood and shopkeepers mostly black, so they are a colorblind pro-civilian rights org.

They got bad press during the Ferguson riots because they wouldn’t back down when asked by the police, when it appeared the police were doing nothing. The citizens I saw interviewed seemed to be very grateful for their presence.

They stood on roof tops geared up for the worst. What you couldn’t see in those pictures where the fire extinguishers they also had. As @Zee mentioned these guys didn’t see color they saw americans needing help that government was too busy to provide

I looked at their website. Joining today.

Yep, that’s the deal. Police had other priorities, oathkeepers stood with the shop owners to help them protect themselves and their livelihoods.

Pretty good description right there

I researched and joined them a few weeks ago. I do not believe they are anti-government as much as they are pro-constitution. SPLC calling them a ‘hate group’ I ignored. As a former military/former LEO, I felt like I fit right in.
The Left thinks they are a ‘white supremacist’ group. I view them as Civil Servants.

Personally I don’t take any classification the SPLC labels as a hate group. I believe that group is a far cry from where their roots came from as I believe they’re a biased sound board. Yet as with anything it’s always best to look it up for yourself or as in this instance simply ask around and make a determination from there.

The Left and Leftists in the Fake News are jumping on the Oath Keepers designation by the SPLC as a Hate Group… They are not… I advise you to be careful in joining the group because law enforcement officers have been called on the carpet for joining Oathkeepers by Fake News groups… I have had to defend people to administrators who have been plagued by Leftists in the Really Fake News to fire people who belonged to Oathkeepers… I had to point out that the mission statement of Oathkeepers is very similar to the oath police officers take after appointment. Please be aware however you are being tracked if you join… BTW the Fake News person in my case was a cyber-journalist and ANTIFA supporter…

I’ve heard t least one Leo on another forum say he can’t join because he’s afraid of losing his job… had his wife join as auxiliary members instead, so they’re in the information loop.

I considered Joining but I am a bit concerned about being put on the NO FLY list.

I’d consider contacting them and ask if their members are reporting that occurs.

Oath-Keepers go back more that a decade. You need to look them up online and find out for yourself. Sheriff Mack is the most notable starter of this group and has given many speeches around the country teaching Sheriff Dept’s their Constitutional duties as elected officials in their communities to uphold the oath of office that they’ve signed on for and not to cower down to political or government abuse or pressure.
…Of course the Left and Socialist Democrats list them as a hate group. Anyone looking to defend the Constitution of this GREAT REPUBLIC (not democracy) they will consider to be a hate group because “they” want OUR Constitution to go away…Oath Keepers will NOT LET THAT HAPPEN!!!
I’ve been an Oath-Keeper since 2011. I’m retired Army and fully stand by our citizens no matter color, race, religion or even sexual preference. If you’re an American Citizen hell bent on supporting the foundational structure of the U.S. Constitution then we are also there to support YOU, your family and businesses.
All this talk about the hate groups being white supremacists is a play from the SOCIALISTS and liberal media who don’t want FREE THINKING, Freedom Loving, Independent Americans because we are uncontrollable at the government level.
Freedom and independence from government oversight is what we want and NEED in this country. To be reliant on the government gives “them” power over you.
Don’t rely on the government or even local police to keep you “safe,” They can’t and won’t do it. They’ll only do what serves their best interests or to follow the orders that they’ve been given (that usually go against us, not for us) Thanks for reading.

I’ve been a member for 8 yrs and have NOT caught any heat at all, anywhere. I have my oath card in my wallet and I even wear an Oath-Keepers shirt and have received ZERO flak for doing so.

Here’s the info from their About page. (Not a promotion for them, just sharing info)

Oath Keepers is a non-partisan association of current and formerly serving military, police, and first responders, who pledge to fulfill the oath all military and police take to “defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic.” That oath, mandated by Article VI of the Constitution itself, is to the Constitution , not to the politicians, and Oath Keepers declare that they will not obey unconstitutional orders, such as orders to disarm the American people, to conduct warrantless searches, or to detain Americans as “enemy combatants” in violation of their ancient right to jury trial. See the Oath Keepers Declaration of Orders We Will Not Obey for details.

Oath Keepers reaches out to both current serving and veterans to remind them of their oaths, to teach them more about the Constitution they swore to defend, and to inspire them to defend it. See below for details on how we do that. Oath Keepers also includes a membership program designated as “Associate Members”, which consists of patriotic citizens who have not served in uniform but who serve now by supporting this mission with their Associate Membership and volunteer activities. Oath Keepers welcomes our Associate Members and appreciates their support of our mission.

Our motto is “ Not on our watch!

@MarkC, @James, @KevinM, @Chris as vets and former military have you guys heard of the Oath Keepers? Your thoughts?
