New Background Check Procedure

Yea, that sounds right.

I just bought a gun in California, and I have to wait 30 days for my background check, and I have a CCW for CA.

Quickest I’ve ever had was 30ish minutes and walked out with my new gun!

Now Colorado has a stupid 3 day wait and it doesn’t matter if you have your CCW permit or not.

And of course they’re pushing to ban all semiautomatic firearms purchases without classes, and an additional permission slip different from a CCW permit :face_with_symbols_over_mouth::rage::rage::rage:

I just passed an old school over the phone NICS background check and it took maybe 5 mins. I was shocked. The owner told me frequent flyers get approved almost instantly.

My experience here in Florida has varied from less than 5 minutes to over 30 minutes. The less than 5 minute one was October 2024. I was the only customer in a 6,000 square foot showroom the day before a hurricane :grinning: I said " WOW! I’ve never had one come back this fast!". The guy said ā€œLook around our store, the background check load is probably pretty low today :rofl:ā€

My conclusion is approval (or disapproval) speed here in Florida is dependent on background check volume at the time.

I’ve noticed the background check volume as well. Thats why I try to never buy on the weekend. Usually Monday is the best I’ve found. Course, I’m retired so I have the luxury of going whenever I want to. I’m in Volusia, where’s that store at? Looks like a good place to get in trouble.

Port Saint Lucie on the East coast … a couple miles South of you :grinning:

Thanks, I may have to take a ride over there as soon as my bank account can afford it…lol

It depends on the place where it is being processed. Larger gun stores usually have a computer system that automatically submits the paperwork in receives an electronic answer. Smaller licensed stores generally do pen and paper and submit it by phone. I am not familiar with any specific’s of Florida.

Lived in FL for many years. Left due to job transfer. My point, now in SC for a good while but if you have a CWP you walk into the store, choose your top, show your permit and go home to check out it shoots.

I went on another forum that was discussing the same topic. Evidently it depends on how much of a deep dive your state does before issuing your CWP. Some states do a more extensive background check and then recognize that as a valid FBI check. I’m not sure where Florida stands on the process but, at least for now, the background check wait time has dramatically come down here. We’ll wait and see how our new ATF director addresses the issue.

IDK. Weird.

In Georgia they don’t even have to make a call, I fill out a paper 4473, show my carry permit and driver license, and off I go.

As long as it’s valid, I’m not sure there’s any other documentation better to prove you can buy a firearm without placing a call.
I used to present a valid Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC) in order to buy one. When I showed my CCW permit, gun store clerk said, ā€œthat’s even better!ā€

I have my Florida CCW license. I buy from a small mom amd pop LGS. He always uses the paper forms. Last few times I bought a gun it didn’t seem like there was a wait at all. He took my CCW and the form, went in the back for less than a minute and came back out, handed my card back and rang me up.

I love living in a free state. I read all these stories of states that ban perfectly normal, useful guns and it’s mind boggling that owning and enjoying using something like a basic rifle with a 30 round magazine could land you in prison for years in some parts of the US. Honestly, a gun is no different than a car or a chainsaw or a hammer. All can do great harm if used wrong, or are totally harmless when used correctly. Just inanimate tools.

Move to Florida bro. You’d like it here. Only thing we can’t do is open carry (unless youre hunting or fishing), but I think that’s getting fixed this year.
