"modified BLT course of fire"

I’m taking a CCW In The Workplace training, and I’ve been told I’ll need to pass a “modified version of the BLT course of fire. You will be shooting from the 3 yard line to the 25 yard line at an upper torso.”

I’d like to familiarize myself and practice for this. Google search tells me BLT course of fire is some sort of serious Combat Pistol Program that the Marine Corps. developed, and i am SURE that’s not what I’ll have to do.

Does anyone have any idea what sort of training is meant by this “modified version of BLT course of fire” is?

Safety safety safety. Keep your muzzle pointed down range at all times except when holstering. Keep your finger out of the trigger guard unless engaging targets. Breath Listen Think.

The BLT approach to handgun qualification (often referring to Belt, Loading devices, and Tactical gear/holster) represents a duty-relevant, high-stakes assessment, usually requiring 80% or higher accuracy under time pressure. Key elements include shooting from multiple distances, using cover, mandatory reload drills, and often low-light scenarios.

Key Components of Duty Handgun Qualifications

  • Gear Setup: Requires a duty belt, secure belt-mounted holster, duty weapon, and spare magazines/loaders.
  • Course Requirements: Typical courses involve shooting from 1 to 25 yards, incorporating standing, kneeling, and sometimes prone positions.
  • Stress Factors:
    • Time Constraints: Strings of fire are timed (e.g., 2-4 seconds per draw and fire).
    • Position Changes: Moving from standing to kneeling or moving between barriers.
    • Reloads/Malfunctions: Mandatory tactical or emergency reloads are often part of the scoring.
  • Low Light/Flashlight: Many qualifications now mandate using a flashlight (handheld or mounted) to identify targets.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to safely draw, shoot, and recover to a ready position from a kneeling/squatting position.
  • Scoring: Passing scores often range from 70% to 80% (or higher, e.g., for instructors).

Common Qualification Stages

  1. Close Quarter (1-3 yards): Quick, instinctive shooting, often one-handed (strong or weak) and drawing from the holster.
  2. Mid-Range (5-7 yards): Shooting on the move or moving to barricades, incorporating reloads.
  3. Long Range (15-25 yards): Precision shooting, utilizing cover, and kneeling/standing

“modified version of the BLT course of fire” can mean anything.
Usually for CCW purposes it’s shooting B27 (or similar silhouette) target from 3 distances:

  • 10 feet
  • 20 or 30 feet
  • 30 or 45 feet

10 shots per each distance

In order to pass the qualification you have to score 80% (24 hits anywhere in silhouette). It may be timed or not.

physical fitness, weapons handling,

Have you seen the FBI classification? I do this once a year to see how all my training has been doing. The BLT course will be a good to see where you stand on your skills.

It’s not a State requirement – just what my employer requires as part of their “CCW In The Workplace” class. I’ve been told by a couple of our Security personnel that the course is not hard, so apparently it is highly modified from what a full BLET would require.

That makes sense.

This kind of qualifications should be used in every Security Agencies. Stationary shooting doesn’t verify if candidate actually is able to press the trigger if needed.

Anyway, good luck :crossed_fingers:

Bacon lettuce and tomato?

Crispy bacon, and a light drizzle of ranch dressing.

What that has to do with guns?

It’s hard to shoot on an empty stomach?
