The origin of the Delta Force aka: Triple tabbed.
Each of the Special Operations Forces has a special specific skill set with some overlap, like how they are inserted into a conflict, and / or behind enemy lines.
Air, land, and sea. All have earned their jump wing, and can be parachuted by air drop, or from off shore can swim in land via the surface, or submerged, or they can land amphibiously, ground pound it in, or climb mountains in.
They are The (SF) “Long Tab”
(SPECIAL FORCES),
(RANGERS), &
(AIRBORNE).
Each, soldier that has qualified in any one of those can retire after decades long careers in any one of those but, volunteered to do the grueling work of becoming qualified in all 3 of them to be qualified in Delta Force
(delta Greek 3-sided letter = Δ).

And, they are spirited, or they would not have cut it for Delta.
They are the ones who go after the Bin Laden types with their boots
on the ground.
So, these are the Special Forces/Ranger/Airborne
