Major Earthquake in the Gulf of Mexico/Gulf of America

Just a heads up to anyone along the Gulf Coast. An 8.0 earthquake just occurred that could possibly lead to a Tsunami.

Most likely won’t have major impacts on the U.S. coast but worth keeping an eye on for those in the coastal zone.

Just down graded to a 7.6 earthquake. Still likely a pretty good shake for anyone on the nearby islands.

Anything over a 5.0 will get your attention. Glad i dont live in AK anymore for that reason.

I was about 60 or 70 miles away from the epicenter of the Ridgecrest CA earthquake several years ago. A little over 7.0 and aftershocks over 5 and 6 for a couple days after. They definitely got my attention!

Current forecast is possibility of tsunami waves 1 to 3 meters above normal tide levels along parts of the Cuban coast. No significant waves expected along the U.S. coast.

I remember when the denali quake hit 2002. Even in Anchorage, it puckered you up. Not to many quakes you feel while driving down the road.

It measured 7.9.

Had to go to bear camp and the interior was still trying to rebuild. Bridge was out on the road we were taking. DOT guy said i can go through the creek or take the 180 mile detour. No question in my mind…have 4wd, will travel

Wasn’t the Gulf of Mexico/America, was in the Caribbean Sea.

A 7.6 magnitude earthquake shakes the Caribbean southwest of Cayman Islands

Will probably all be renamed as part of the the American Ocean soon;)

Appears it occurred along a strike-slip fault which are less prone to making tsunamis than normal faults since there is not a big uplift of land on one side of fault.

Just thought folks might want a heads up in case it did trigger a tsunami. I suspect people along the East Coast don’t pay as much attention to earthquakes as those of us forced to spend time closer to the West coast.

You are correct just like y’all don’t pay much attention to hurricanes and south doesn’t pay attention to snow.

Some of us pay attention to all things like that. Been through all of them, including a volcano eruption, albeit minor one. Still jacked things up.

Ill take a hurricane, tornado, or major snow storm any day. They give warnings on those. Earthquakes suck

It always interests me how many people ignore the warnings on the hurricanes and other storms until they are just about to get slammed by them.

Earthquake warnings are getting ever so slightly better but the best you can hope for is a warning a few seconds to a couple of minutes beforehand. Fortunately people can have a little more warning for the tsunamis they may generate since the seismic waves travel faster than the ocean waves.

I grew up with the ice storms, tornados, and blizzards.
My first 4.0 was just creepy

One of our German shepherds was a good earthquake early warning device. You could tell a shaker was coming just by his actions. Other dogs of ours were dumasses and they could have cared less but Kayser had some kind of sense to him.

Especially if your not used to it. A 4.0 can grab your attention if your new to Earthquakes

We get our share of big snow storms here in Northern AZ where I live. I was even stuck working in SoCal when Hillary (the hurricane/tropical storm not the disastrous politician) came through a couple of years ago.

Since I travel and have friends and family all around the country I tend to pay attention to potential impacts throughout the country and beyond.

Bad part of tsunami warnings is that most dont listen to them. Generally if a tsunami comes in its so small, most dont even notice it. No worrys if the alarm goes off.

Until its something like the Indonesia tsunami. Luckily thats very rare

Something like this would put me in a bad mood.
1700ft wave…unbelievable

Rare but devastating. I pay extra attention to large earthquake warnings whenever I am near the coast. I use the QuakeFeed app. It lets me customize alerts based on size of quakes and distance from your location.
