Deadly blast rips through military explosives facility in Tennessee

Story by Kerry Breen

A powerful explosion ripped through a military explosives facility in Tennessee on Friday morning, leaving multiple people dead and missing, officials said. Video from the scene showed damaged vehicles and charred debris scattered around the area.

The Hickman County Sheriff’s Office said that there had been an explosion at Accurate Energetic Systems, a military explosives plant. Emergency services are responding, the office said.

At a news conference, Humphrey County Sheriff Chris Davis said there were several people unaccounted for and some confirmed deaths, but gave no specifics. He warned there could be continued small explosions at the site. Hickman County Advanced EMT David Stewart told the Associated Press that emergency crews initially couldn’t enter the plant because of continuing detonations.

The Hickman County mayor’s office previously told CBS News it had no confirmed information about missing people, injuries or fatalities.

CBS affiliate WTVF-TV in Nashville broadcast images of debris strewn about the site, with damaged vehicles in a parking lot.

The Associated Press reported that the blast rattled homes miles away. Gentry Stover, a nearby resident, told the AP that it woke him up.

“I thought the house had collapsed with me inside of it,” he said in a phone interview. “I live very close to Accurate and I realized about 30 seconds after I woke up that it had to have been that.”

Accurate Energetic Systems specializes in the development, manufacture, handling and storage of products and explosives for military, aerospace and commercial demolition markets, according to their website. The company is cooperating with law enforcement, Davis said.

The facility is on the border of Hickman and Humphreys County, about 60 miles southwest of Nashville.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

First responders searched the rubble for missing people Friday after a powerful blast ripped through an explosives manufacturing plant in rural Tennessee, sending plumes of smoke into the air and shaking homes miles away.

Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis said 19 people were still missing and feared dead Friday afternoon.

“This has probably been one of the most devastating situations that I’ve been on in my career,” Davis said through tears.

Here is what to know as officials try to determine what caused the explosion:

Search ongoing

Rescuers had to wait for hours to begin their search because of the burning field of debris and risks of secondary explosions at the site southwest of Nashville, authorities said. The area is now secure and there is no longer a risk.

There are casualties and injuries related to the explosion, but the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency hasn’t shared any numbers because the Department of Health hasn’t confirmed them, spokesperson Kristin Coulter said by telephone.

It is currently unknown how many people were inside of the building at the time.

The strength of the blast at Accurate Energetic Systems was felt by residents in Lobelville, which is a 20-minute drive away.

On October 10, 2025, an explosion occurred at an Accurate Energetic Systems manufacturing plant in Hickman County, Tennessee, United States, resulting in multiple fatalities, at least four injuries, and 19 people missing.

Background

Accurate Energetic Systems is a manufacturer of explosives, including demolition charges and high explosives for the Department of Defense.[1][2][3] The company was established in 1980.[4] The facility is located near the border between Hickman County and Humphreys County in Tennessee.[1] In 2014, an explosion at another Accurate Energetic Systems manufacturing plant in McEwen killed one person and injured three others while about 20 employees were inside the building as the facility sustained considerable damage.[5] The mayor of Hickman County reported that the facility had no safety issues apart from the 2014 explosion.[6]

Explosion

At 7:48 a.m. central daylight time, an explosion occurred at a building at the Accurate Energetic Systems campus. The plume of smoke from the explosion was so large that the WSMV-TV First Alert Weather radar picked up on it.[7] Helicopter video showed scattered debris and damaged vehicles at the site on fire.[8] The building was destroyed in the explosion.[9] Doorbell footage up to 20 mi (32 km) from the facility captured the sound of the explosion and the shaking of the camera. The Humphreys County Emergency Management Agency reported that 19 people inside the building remain missing while multiple others are injured. One person was reportedly killed.[3] Four or five people were medically evacuated to nearby hospitals, including at least three at TriStar Health in Dickson.[10]

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Department of Homeland Security, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation were among the agencies that responded to the explosion.[11] Emergency responders were initially unable to reach the site due to continued explosions.

McEWEN, Tenn. (AP) — Officials were investigating a blast that leveled an explosives plant in rural Tennessee, as families of the 18 people missing and feared dead waited anxiously Saturday for answers.

The explosion Friday morning at Accurate Energetic Systems, which supplies and researches explosives for the military, scattered debris over at least a half-mile (800-meter) area and was felt by residents more than 15 miles (24 kilometers) away, said Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis.

The company has been awarded numerous military contracts, largely by the U.S. Army and Navy, to supply different types of munitions and explosives, according to public records. The products range from bulk explosives to landmines and small breaching charges, including C4.

No one is believed to have survived a powerful explosion at an explosives plant in Tennessee, officials said Saturday, as crews continue to recover remains from the blast site.

“At this time, we have recovered no survivors,” Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis said during a news briefing.

Davis would not share how many people were killed in the Friday morning blast, saying “we’re the we’re in the process of the identification of the remains.”

“We can probably make the assumption, and I’m not even going to use the word assumption — I think that we can utilize, well, I have to use that word, forgive me — we can assume that they are deceased at this point.”

Davis said that the cause of the blast at Accurate Energetic Systems near McEwen is still under investigation, and that he cannot rule out foul play.

“That might be days or weeks or months before we can do that,” he said.
