Personally, I think the greatest threat to humanity is AI … Look at the last hundred year and the progress we have made. It would take AI less than a decade to accomplish. This time factor will only increase exponentially. No biological needs Unlike living beings, AI doesn’t need food, water, or sleep to function. It could easily put solar collectors in space and beam back the energy and heat up the earth … Kill off every living thing. It doesn’t need it to survive… All it needs is raw material… In space it doesn’t need to worry about food, water or oxygen… It can travel to other planets with ease like our satellites … To recover the resources it needs. Money is not a factor. It has no need for it… It will simple react to it needs … address them accordingly … We will have release a plague upon the galaxy …

Agree that someone needs to make all these AI developers watch all the Terminator and Matrix movies back to back!

But I think there are other equally large threats to the human race as well. Like medicine/bio weapon research. Also the Sun could burp, or someone in China, Russia, Iran or North Korea could push a button, shutting down our electrical grid and sending us all back to the preindustrial age.

Though the threat of nuclear/bio war or terrorist acts resulting from all the foreign relations games our military industrial/inteligence complex have been playing is right up there as well.

There is an argument that the Fermi paradox may exist because all the advanced civilizations in the universe end up destroying themselves before they can spread far enough to come into contact with other civilization. Our odds of breaking that trend don’t look very good at the moment.

I think the L in the drake equation helps explain away the Fermi paradox … If you look at just our time with signals . We went from AM in 1906 to microwave in 1950 Our next great leap will take us where . The amount of time we use a type of signal. The distance in which a signal must travel along with the time these two will intersect. In a vast ocean known as the cosmos. If you blink you might miss it .This is also believing that all forms of life use the same method …
