I have shared a story on here somewhere about a trip to the indoor range with my niece. If I can find it, I’ll share it here. I still frequent the same range, but not with my niece. I have the same problem as @TexasEskimo with heat and humidity, so indoor ranges are the standard for me in the warmer months. I double up on my hearing protection when I go though, ear plugs and electronic ear muffs… can’t get back that lost hearing, and I already struggle with that in the left ear.
One of my stories from another thread:
The indoor range I go to has instructors for beginning shooters… One day I noticed a crater in the cinder block about a foot above the bench. I remember thinking “how do you manage that!?!” Fast forward two weekends and I’m back with my 12yo niece teaching her to shoot. Lo and behold “bam bam” and I hear yelling and an instructor comes to my bay to make sure we are ok. They immediately left, and we packed up our stuff. That day drove home the lessons of “always point down range and keep your booger hook off the trigger until you are ready to fire at your intended target” for my niece.
If you move here (CA) you’ll have to register your guns,
That alone would keep me out.
There are plenty of other states with fair weather
Florida, Texas, Arizona…
New Mexico, Oregon, Utah…
That is how it used to be in my town. I miss those days
When I got the email notification on this, I thought you were full of crap. I lived in Cali for 6 years and loved it. I had purchased three weapons there and never had to register them…so I thought. I just looked and Firearms Information for New California Residents | State of California - Department of Justice - Office of the Attorney General yup! I have to PAY them to tell me I have something that goes bang. Cali has for sure been crossed off. I think I’m moving to Texas. I’ve never been to Texas and I like new experiences. I hate the Cali gun laws.
AZ is nice but it gets too dang hot. I had a layover in AZ and they sent a notice out saying it was 114 and if it got to 120 they were grounding all flights. I had an interview in Cali that I could not miss. Luckily, my plane was boarding right as it happened and they were rushing us through.
AZ has some pleasant micro climates Flagstaff and Sierra Vista are two I’m aware of. Grand Junction in Colorado is pretty mild, but lousy surfing
Texas can get pretty dang hot as well. I lived in Dallas for 6 years, there was one summer the temps were in triple digits for 80 days straight. That winter I was scraping ice off the windshield.
Wait…it snows in Texas? Like Minnesota -40 snow?
I lived in Colorado for 11 years and loved it. I would move back but I kinda want something different.
It was more ice than snow when I lived there in the early 80’s. I know that was a long time ago, but weather probably has not changed that much.
I can handle cold. Autumn is my fav time of year for sure. A little ice doesn’t scare me. Driving down the highway with unplowed roads scare me lol.
It doesn’t snow here often. It snowed a few years ago for a couple hours… It’s a little toasty more often than not though
At the range recently, I noticed a fellow patron place his rifle, butt down on the ground, muzzle facing up, leaning against the wall dividing the lane, almost at 90 degrees.
I could not help but think, what if that rifle fell, depending on the type of rifle, and if loaded, it could shoot at random, and injure someone.
Guess I could have politely mentioned something to the patron, and or to the range staff at the counter. At a different range though, I noticed the shop had a safety worker in the range; I thought that was outstanding.
What’s the best way to place a rifle down at the range to rest it? I thought it included: Turn safety on, ensure no round is in the chamber, lay it facing 180 degrees flat, on the lane’s bench/table, barrel facing down range toward target.
Thank you.
