John Correia: We are past the 72 Hour Rule for the shooting in Twin Falls, Idaho at the In n Out. We can now maybe see some important lessons and draw a couple of inferences and conclusions:
-
The motive for the shooting has not been established. The Some Asshole Rule prohibits ever naming the shooter, may his memory be forgotten in disdain. There won’t ever be any reason that is worth knowing.

TWO bystanders engaged the shooter and are legitimate heroes. Jordan Salinas is the guy who is in the pics that have circulated, carrying a FN 5.7 with a suppressor and getting shots off. I have not seen any confirmation that he got any hits and my guess is that he didn’t, but FIBSA moved the gunman away from the restaurant. Austin Scott James is the second to engage the shooter, and James was armed but chose not to draw his gun for fear of being misidentified as a perpetrator. He encountered the gunman at close range and was unfortunately critically wounded.

An off duty Idaho State Trooper was also present and fired at the perp, but also appears to have missed. The perp died of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot.

Three people were killed and 7 injured. I cannot find a straight answer whether the perp is one of the three, though I have seen two victims who died named and that makes me think he is likely the third.
A couple of lessons here:
A. Carry your gun. You don’t get to set the time and place of needing it, the perp does and he will only tell you about it at the last minute.
B. Please don’t get wrapped around the axle about the dude carrying a FN 5.7 suppressed. 5.7 sucks out of a pistol and I would not recommend it for defensive use, though as shown here rule number one of winning a gunfight is “have a gun.” Still, emulate Salinas’ heart and attitude, not his gear selection.
C. I say all the time that it is really hard to miss fast enough to win a gunfight but really easy to hit slow enough to lose one. Here, both people who shot at the perp missed, and yet still won. So FIBSA (“F&^%^ I’m Being Shot At!”) is a real thing. And yet I wonder if people were killed and injured after the perp came under fire because he wasn’t put down quickly.
D. Marksmanship at distance is NOT outside the lane of the private citizen and justified shots were taken here at considerable distance. I cannot tell you how far because that hasn’t been released but we are talking much more than 7 yards here. So this shows one example among many of private citizens needing marksmanship skills at perhaps 25 yards or more. Eli Dicken got hits at 40. So yes, practice 3-7 yards a lot, but don’t ignore farther ranges.
E. Also, the pistol mounted optic is incredibly advantageous at distance and not disadvantageous up close and this is another reminder of the utility of a dot on the carry gun for private citizens. The Gun Amish will holler that they can do work with iron sights and that isn’t entirely wrong but you’re an idiot if you think it’s not easier with a dot at distance, and that these distances are happening in private citizen gunfights.
F. Perhaps the biggest lesson is that the presence of someone armed and willing to engage kept the death count under 10. Ed Monk says this all the time in his presentations about active killers, that to keep the body count under 10 takes someone armed, present, and willing to engage. That has to be us, friends. Which means that wherever you are present you need to be armed and willing to love your neighbor if the need arises to protect them from death at the hands of a madman. If you won’t or can’t do that, I understand. But if you can and will, talk to your family about it and let them know to get down and get away from you and run to cover and let you work without worrying about them.
G. Trauma medical equipment is crucial. Keep a big kit in the car and a small but useful one on your person. I don’t know if prompt aid to the victims who died would have helped or if prompt aid played a factor in any of those who survived, but it certainly ups the odds. Take some trauma medical training and carry your IFAK. Get over the icks and love your neighbor enough to save their life. Even those who can’t or won’t carry a firearm can be part of the trauma medical team to save lives.
There are likely more lessons than these, but these stood out to me. It took 72 hours for the fog of war to settle some and for the misinformation to suss out, so waiting 72 hours to opine is still the smart way to go.

Great that a citizen stepped up and an off duty state trooper stepped up to stop the shooter. It doesn’t make any sense to spend zillions of dollars trying to unravel the shooters mind. Just another evil act. No logic can be applied.

I sometimes wonder, when we get the perps name, his dads name, his high school sweethearts name, his bosses name, the company he’s employed at… if it isn’t simply police ego, “Look at this, we found all of this out about the dead guy…”.

How ironic. 
Anyways, I heard the 27 grain AP 5.7 was pretty effective, but haven’t seen it available to the public for awhile. A couple guys I know shooting 5.7 are hitting plates at 20O yards with the 40 grain, with a dot, both using Rugers.
