Well, I have been considering all the generous comments here and searching out many reviews of various pistols on the web. I am starting to consider the re-released Remington R51. At the least I want to find one to pick up and hold. Some reviewers I trust have been very complimentary.

As soon as I find one. Two nearby stores have them on sale but online only, not in the store.

Look at a Walther CCP.
It has a 3.54 inch fixed barrel, but it has the external safety, and the grip fits my large (but not-extra large) hands.
