How long has it been since you've been to the range?

Just got home. Great day shooting targets and shooting the breeze with friends. :+1:

That reminds me of the Clint Smith quote
“I may be killed by my own gun, but he’s going to have to beat me with it”

Been too damn long…Indoor Range(s) suck out here, (2) Same Owners.

High wind warnings have closed the Cop shop Outdoor range for weeks…

Trying tomorrow Morning to go Indoor again (didn’t work out so well for me mentally
a few days ago). These people are so arrogant and don’t play well with others.
Damn shame they have a Monopoly in this town.
If you don’t hear from me for a couple I probably dismantled an RO and stuffed his remaining in the Brass Bin… Just sayin’

I loath indoor ranges. They seem to attract people that have no clue. The one closest to mu house employes “range masters” that look like they are on a summer job earning minimum wage. They stand around watching like they have a clue. One of these dimwitts kept telling me that my range bag was over the little yellow line in my lane while the dumbass next to me was crossing his muzzle over me & everyone else. I had to “politely” ask him to watch his muzzle because he was putting everyone in danger. The employee kid asked me to not bother the other shooters. I left without fireing one round. About a month later a 9 year old girl was shot by her brother. The range closed for about 4 days until another media story was the lead. Sometime that same year a woman shot a man in the waiting area. The media called it an “accidental discharge”. Unbelievable. I’m sure that there are indoor ranges that are well run & very safe. I’ve just had some bad experiences with a few in my area

YUP!
I agree Brother, Indoor Ranges are no fun for me.
But the Outdoor one I like has been closed more often than open.
(Have no clue why lately? Except the Wind events we’ve been having)
WHAT? People don’t fight when it’s windy? I didn’t know that?
I mentioned I sat outside this Range the other day and just
couldn’t go in. Welded to my seat. If it was just ONE reason I had a problem
I would say to myself ‘Suck it up Buttercup!’ Soldier on and get in there and shoot!’
(The fact that I might get an ‘Accidental Discharge in my head may be the biggest reason)
Indoors if I wear ANYTHING remotely ‘TACTICAL’ I’m labeled a Motard’ or worse.
I LIKE wearing my 'Battle Rattle; when I train. Indoors I wear Grey man clothes.
In my mind ‘You Train like your going to fight!’ Grabbing mags out of your Plate Carrier or Chest Rig gives me comfort, the weight of theplates and the Mags, Ifak etc sets the tone for a good shoot. I focus better and get more out of it. Indoors I can’t move around . I get criticism if I draw from my Holster sometimes.
It’s like I’m a damn ‘Boot’ and I Pushback at these niggly tactics … In the last (6) months
I’ve Squared off on (2) different RO’s who didn’t know shite! I don’t want to fight these idiots
I want to shoot! If I’m looking over my shoulder rather than being focused on the task at hand I’d rather just NOT GO! And THAT is unacceptable.

I asked my son, now 37, if he would like to go out and shoot with me. He said no sadly.

Not every kid is willing to do so.
My son knows I’m a Firearm Instructor but even that he tried to shoot by himself. I never pushed him to use me but he was aware that I was always ready for him.

After one range visit he came to me with his target asking what’s wrong and why his grouping was over 10 inch apart at 20 feet…

Now we have scheduled 1 hr private father-son pistol shooting class every week.

Ya, that’s another thing!! Not being able to draw from my holster at the indoor range. The range I use is an outdoor tactical range with private bays of different sizes available. There are cars, 55gal drums & metal barriers to shoot around. You can actually move to cover or concealment before firing. Run & gun, shoot while advancing etc… Not just stand there & poke holes in paper. Some days, I will just go to a lane & shoot metal targets like everyone else but even then, I occasionally see other shooters that I’ve had conversations with. We occasionally shoot eachothers gun (if we’re comfortable with the other shooters) which is great!! Beats the hell out of renting another gun.

That is what I love about shooting on my backyard range. I rarely stand in one spot and poke holes in paper. Only time I do that is when I’m working on draw, point shoot with speed and accuracy. When I say speed, I don’t mean as fast as I can. I mean safely, under control and accurately. Learn that first and speed will come later.

Every time I hear about your backyard Wonderland I I turn a little green w/ envy.
(and THAT never happens in any other aspect of my life)
To be able to go outside on my property and plink/train would be HEAVEN.
You rock William.
I was thinking this morning I would buy a Suppressor for my AR and just go to the
Mesa (Now a decent drive) with all the housing sprawl going on. Find a decent spot and just plink,

No wonder you hear when growing up old guy’s pining about the good old days…
One last thing NO ‘Foreign objects’ Metal stands etc on these Ranges…Just Paper—THEIR TARGETS also
No splatter Targets from the Outside, No drinks or food (I understand those to a point with all the
lead flying around), but no Granola Bar? or Travel water bottle…NONE! Go outside in the break room…
OK, what about all my stuff? Just leave it, it’ll be safe-------RIGHT As____ ! sure!

I am lucky in that I have never had to shoot at an indoor range. There is a decent outdoor range not far away but they don’t let you draw and move so I hardly ever go there. But I am surrounded by Forest Service land with several good gravel pits to choose from and do almost all my shooting there.

I just looked at the public lands layer on my mapping app. Seems like you live in one of the few places in the Southwest that isn’t surrounded by Forest Service and BLM land. There are the Sandias just to the East but if I remember right much of that is Wilderness Area and may not be open to target shooting? But it seems like if you were willing to drive an hour or so North or South you can get to some forest service and BLM land. Should be some spots out there unless the local districts don’t allow target shooting in NM?

You Speak-em TRUTH Brother
But lately I’ve been hearing ANY ‘Shot’s fired’ brings the man.
My LGS keeps me informed about Ranges and places to shoot.
(I bribe them with Black Rifle Coffee!)
If I could get on my knees and beg them to open a Range
I assured them I would help run it! (unofficially of course)
They’d make serious Bank!
South would be the way to go for me to shoot
North (Towards Santa Fe is out) It’s just too populated now.
Gunplay ‘Scares’ the Sheeple now (I’m Serious)
My Outdoor Cop SHop is really my only option
THERE I can shoot N Scoot, any targets I want, Steel spindles etc.
(HEAVEN on Earth)
They just have to get their act together.
They are kind of City/County run Not Private Ownership but they must pay
crappy and people don’t stay. Always a different cast of characters. They must
CONSTANTLY hire ! Stupid. (and Yes, before you ask I’ve applied a few times
never a call back—who knows why?–I don’t bother anymore)
But I really miss the Brotherhood all the SWAT guys and the Statie’s, They are a kick.

The Worlds a mess out here. Good Cops keep leaving.
And they don’t go to the Indoor Ranges----Fancy that? They hate them.
One SWATTY said to me once ‘Too easy to killed in those Kill Boxes’
It was nice to get validation I wasn’t the only Gunner who didn’t like their Tactic’s or Safety (lack of).

Well shyte,

Get the target set up, mom says go to the grocery store with and I do. This is what I see when I get home. Before anybody loses their bowl of corn flakes, my neighbor and I have an agreement. I won’t shoot unless his cattle are clear and I will buy any I accidentally harm. Going on 9+ years and he’s happy and my money has stayed in my pocket.

Went to my club in CT yesterday. Moved most of my firearms to WV, but have the mini 14 and M1a in CT, as well as my shotgun and 4 pistols. Club was empty, 314 acres and me…Practiced drawing with my carry Glocks, and smiled shooting the Springfield RO…Rifle, I just brought the mini14, all the steel was gone, so I did some paper, then aimed for rocks. May get up there once or twice more before I’m permanently in WV, but no great loss if I don’t. Think I brought all my .45 acp to WV…ugh. Plan is to get a chunk of land near the WV house and set up a run and gun range. In the interim, the town park has been very social and enjoyable.
