Hopefully this story goes nowhere, but why is there a lab in Sudan with live samples of measles and polio? And which 1st world nation and/or UN committee thought it was a good idea to put it there?

I flew from Kenya (Nairobi) to London (Heathrow) on Sunday (23 April 2023).
The pilot made an announcement right after takeoff, to the effect of:
"if you have been watching the news, you will understand why our flight is a bit longer than expected because we are avoiding Sudan airspace … "
I was unaware of what he was talking about until this morning - we got home late last night.
