US East Coast dockworkers strike, halting half the nation’s ocean shipping (msn.com)

NEW YORK (Reuters) -Dockworkers on the U.S. East Coast and Gulf Coast began a strike early on Tuesday, their first large-scale stoppage in nearly 50 years, halting the flow of about half the nation’s ocean shipping after negotiations for a new labor contract broke down over wages.

The strike blocks everything from food to automobile shipments across dozens of ports from Maine to Texas, in a disruption analysts warned will cost the economy billions of dollars a day, threaten jobs, and potentially stoke inflation.

The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) union representing 45,000 port workers had been negotiating with the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) employer group for a new six-year contract ahead of a midnight Sept. 30 deadline.

The ILA said in a statement on Tuesday it shut down all ports from Maine to Texas at 12:01 a.m. ET (0401 GMT) and had rejected USMX’s final proposal made on Monday, adding the offer fell “far short of the demands of its members to ratify a new contract”.

The ILA’s leader, Harold Daggett, has said employers such as container ship operator Maersk and its APM Terminals North America have not offered appropriate pay increases or agreed to demands to stop port automation projects.

The USMX said in a statement on Monday it had offered to hike wages by nearly 50%, up from a prior proposal. Daggett, meanwhile, said the union is pushing for a 61.5% pay increase, according to CNBC.

“We are prepared to fight as long as necessary, to stay out on strike for whatever period of time it takes, to get the wages and protections against automation our ILA members deserve,” Daggett said on Tuesday.

“USMX owns this strike now. They now must meet our demands for this strike to end.”

USMX did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The strike, the ILA’s first since 1977, is worrying businesses that rely on ocean shipping to export their wares or secure crucial imports, as it affects 36 ports that handle a range of containerized goods from bananas to clothing to cars.

Retailers in recent months have accelerated holiday imports and are moving other shipments to the U.S. West Coast where possible.

“We expect the strike itself to last for five to seven days until a government intervention… but the ripple effect is likely to be felt across the whole network into Europe, into Asia for at least into January, February,” said Peter Sand, chief analyst at shipping pricing platform Xeneta.

Barclays researchers said they expect European automakers like BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagen and Volvo to be among the car companies whose imports would be affected, but noted that relatively high inventories will shield the immediate impact.

Automakers Hyundai and GM said they were monitoring the strike and had contingency plans in place.

There are nearly 100,000 containers in New York City-area ports alone waiting to be unloaded, now frozen by the strike, and 35 container ships headed to New York over the coming week, said Rick Cotton, executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

The union is “holding the entire country over a barrel,” said Steve Hughes, CEO of HCS International, which specializes in automotive sourcing and shipping. “I’m really afraid that it is going to be ugly.”

The dispute is also wedging labor-friendly U.S. President Joe Biden into a virtual no-win position as Vice President Kamala Harris runs a razor-tight election race against Republican former President Donald Trump.

White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients and top economic adviser Lael Brainard urged USMX board members at a meeting on Monday to resolve the dispute fairly and quickly, a White House official said. But Biden’s administration has repeatedly ruled out the use of federal powers to break a strike in the event of an impasse.

U.S. Chamber of Commerce President Suzanne Clark urged Biden on Monday to reconsider, saying it “would be unconscionable to allow a contract dispute to inflict such a shock to our economy.”

The White House on Tuesday said in a statement that it is monitoring the effects on the supply chain “and assessing ways to address potential impacts,” noting the initial effect on consumers is expected to be limited.

Officials told Reuters on the condition of anonymity they are hoping for a short strike, pointing to the sign the two sides had resumed talks late on Sunday and had narrowed their differences on Monday.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said Tuesday that it does not expect “significant changes to food prices or availability in the near term.”

Economists at Capital Economics said the strike is “unlikely to trigger major economic disruption,” though they added that a lengthy stoppage would force Biden to step in if the two sides cannot come to an agreement.

BACKUP PLANS

Retailers accounting for about half of all container shipping volume have been busily implementing backup plans as they head into their all-important winter holiday sales season.

Many of the big players rushed in Halloween and Christmas merchandise early to avoid any strike-related disruptions, incurring extra costs to ship and store those goods.

Retail behemoth Walmart, the largest U.S. container shipper, and membership warehouse club operator Costco say they are doing everything they can to mitigate any impact.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul said the state expects no immediate impact on food supplies or essential goods but said impacts could widen depending on how long it lasts.

“It’s critical for USMX and the ILA to reach a fair agreement soon that respects workers and ensures a flow of commerce through our ports,” she said on Tuesday.

Shares in Maersk dropped almost 5% on Tuesday in Copenhagen, with profit-taking following recent gains, as investors had been expecting significant increases in freight rates due to the strike, which would boost shipping companies’ earnings.

The Danish company has said it would introduce a port disruption surcharge on all cargo moving to and from the U.S. East Coast and Gulf Coast terminals from Oct. 21 ranging from $1,500 to $3,780 a container.

OMG… It’s spreading like wildfire!
Everyone panics now. 3-2-1- :scream:

Bird flu pandemic fears skyrocket as US identifies first cases of possible human-to-human transmission (msn.com)

Health authorities in the US are studying seven people who developed influenza symptoms after being exposed to a Missouri bird flu patient, raising the possibility of the first human-to-human transmission of the infection.

This raises serious alarm bells as the mortality rate for HN51 avian influenza in humans is high, with a 52 per cent case fatality rate (CFR) from January 1, 2003, to July 19, 2024.

None have tested positive for HN51 and work is underway to see if they have antibodies to the strain that’s spreading like wildfire among birds and dairy cows in the US, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday in a statement.

Six were healthcare workers who encountered the first American known to be infected with bird flu without previous exposure to a sick animal, and the other was a close household contact of the patient.
All developed mild respiratory symptoms after their exposure.
More than 100 healthcare workers were exposed to the Missouri patient to varying degrees while the person was hospitalized, the agency said.
“CDC continues to closely monitor available data from influenza surveillance systems, particularly in affected states, and there has been no sign of unusual influenza activity in people, including in Missouri,” the agency said.

H5N1 avian influenza virus has spread like wildfire since it was first detected in April. Nearly 200 dairy herds in 14 states have tested positive for the H5N1 strain.

So far, 14 human cases of the H5N1 avian influenza have been confirmed in the US. Thirteen people had been in close contact with infected dairy cattle or poultry.

This exactly! Their annual budget is $30,000,000,000! People are hungry and thirsty in devastated areas. There is no food, baby formula, water. You know, the basics of keeping people alive.

Somehow Amazon can keep the obscure vitamins I order in a warehouse in Florida, and can manage to have them at my door 6 hours or so after I order them, but FEMA can’t manage to keep any of the basics of life on hand for emergencies? WTF? Where are these people? We’re the phuckin United States. We have heavy lift helicopters, resources, and we’re letting babys starve in North Carolina because we don’t have formula on hand, or a way to get it to the people in need.

Yes! Add to that list a gas powered generator. The only thing on that list I didn’t use was the gas stove, but I do have a gas grill and a gas burner I cook on during outages. With fossil fuel I can live just fine without my electric company. No fossil fuel, no modern life.

A few houses around here in Florida burned up because of their electric cars in the garages getting submerged in salt water.

Frank Fritz has died, Fox News Digital can confirm.

“We are saddened to share that our friend and beloved member of The HISTORY Channel and ‘American Pickers’ family, Frank Fritz, has passed away on September 30, 2024,” The History Channel and Cineflex Productions shared in a statement with Fox News Digital. “Frank filmed ‘American Pickers’ for over a decade. He will be deeply missed.”

His former co-star Mike Wolfe also posted about the “American Pickers” star’s death on Instagram. “It’s with a broken heart that I share with all of you that Frank passed away last night,” he wrote.

“I’ve [known] Frank for more [than] half my life and what you’ve seen on TV has always been what I have seen, a dreamer who was just as sensitive as he was funny. The same off camera as he was on, Frank had a way of reaching the hearts of so many by just being himself.”

The Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts a ‘calmer, gentler winter’ (msn.com)

The 208th edition of the Almanac says that much of the U.S. is in for a “Wet Winter Whirlwind” during the 2024-2025 winter season, meaning winter will be warmer than usual, but also longer and wetter. That’s thanks to the incoming La Niña weather pattern, which is likely to hit from September to November. But the end of January is the exception — look out for “a very active storm track” with strong winds and heavy precipitation that could result in “copious amounts of snow, rain, sleet, and ice (depending on where you live),” according to the Almanac.

Tennessee investigating plastics factory after several workers trapped by Helene floodwaters died (msn.com)

Impact Plastics Inc. surrounded by mud and debris Tuesday in Erwin, Tenn.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the state’s criminal investigation agency, said Wednesday it is looking into allegations against an Erwin plastics factory where several workers died and some went missing after they were swept away by floodwaters from Hurricane Helene.

“At the request of 1st Judicial District Attorney General Steve Finney, TBI agents are investigating allegations involving Impact Plastics,” Leslie Earhart, the bureau’s spokesperson said in a statement to NBC News. The bureau deferred additional questions to the District Attorney General’s Office.

Finney in a statement said that he specifically asked “that they review the occurrences of Friday, September 27, 2024, to identify any potential criminal violations.”

NBC News has reached out to Impact Plastics but did not get an immediate response.

Relatives of the missing and deceased workers and factory employees who survived have alleged they were made to show up to work despite movement of the hurricane through the area. Some have said they were denied the chance to leave before the torrid waters from heavy rainfall inundated the plastics factory’s parking lot and cut off their escape routes.

Robbie Jarvis, one of the surviving employees, told NBC News his requests to leave were denied and he was told instead to move his car, which he did twice.

He said despite the weather “we were told to be at work” and about 30 people were working Friday morning when the flooding trapped them. He described a scene of chaos and panic as workers tried to traverse the deadly waters.

“I just wish we never went to work that day. Because it was unnecessary, all these lives we lost because of that. It was wrong,” Jarvis said.

Bertha Mendoza, 56, was among workers who were trapped. Her son, Guillermo Mendoza, confirmed to NBC News that she had died when she was swept from the flat bed of a truck of a company next door to the plastics factory that had come to rescue her.

Fernando Ruiz, the son of Lidia Verdugo, one of the plant workers, also confirmed to NBC News that his mother had died. She fell into the water from a vehicle that was trying to get her to safety, he said.

Impact Plastics Inc. has expressed sympathy for the missing and deceased workers but said in a statement workers were given time to leave the factory.

“While most employees left immediately, some remained on or near the premises for unknown reasons,” the company said in a statement. "Senior management and assistants remained to oversee employee departures, assess damage and preserve company records. They were the last to exit the building.

The company has also said that at no time did it tell workers they would be fired if they left and that bilingual staff delivered warnings to workers.

The company said five workers and a contractor were on a truck that was tipped over in the floodwaters. The company and state officials are not publicly identifying the dead in deference to families.

I’m sorry to say this (REALLY). But, Where are people’s Ballz and Common Sense today?
A Friggin’ Hurricane (strong one too) is bearing down on you and you STAY @ work because you don’t want to get in TROUBLE with the Boss or fired?
Yepper, Dead and Employed is a much better option (Shaking my head sadly).

From the stupid files (which seems to be growing larger everyday)

I was coming home from a job interview (yes, I got it!) and I’m @ a light, off to my left I see this (20) something year old on his phone (totally absorbed @ whatever was on his screen). A Big Rig was making a right turn and this kid’s toes were over the curb waiting for the ‘White’ hand to walk blink on.
Long story short he gets hit by the Mirror and bounces off the cab and is ground under the first set of double wheels! I make a hard left against the light (it was clear as everybody stopped dead)
I pull up behind the rig and grab my IFAK but really there was nothing to do. Looked like when I used to see David lettermen drop of Produce from a tall building just to see the splatter. Nasty visual.
EMT’s were there in (5) minutes, Cops a bit longer, I asked if they had a sheet to put over him and they replied ‘We don’t do that anymore?’ Really? Seriously? The Gawker’s and Lookie Lou’s were piling up so I asked of I could cover the kid myself? No first responder seemed to object so I got my trusty old ARMY blanket out and covered the kid. I actually heard somebody say Awww! like show’s over (sick fxxkin’ people).
Where is the Common Sense these days’, I know I asked that already but couldn’t the Trucker see the potential accident in waiting? Blow his airhorn’s? (they still have them amirite?), Couldn’t the kid, using the slightest bit of SA Hear, see the Danger Close? I mean, this was the Trucker’s Enter/Exit street…
I know I didn’t have to pull over, I KNEW he was Road Kill (I’m sorry folk’s but that’s what went through my head) But I had to try… Poor dumb kid goes up to Saint Peter and he just get’s Pete’s best head shake (dumbass!) What hold’s people’s attention on these phones? I hate them, a necessary evil to be sure, Somebody can always TRACK US! No matter what we do to take out tracking software, App’s, whatever.
And sadly, (as per usual, this kid didn’t even make a Headline, Online News Blurb, nothing). With rockets raining down on Israel, Political debates what’s this kid’s chances of making a headline…nada. So Sad.

Have a care folk’s, Eyes Open, Ears up! Head on a swivel, Be in the moment. Whatever’s on that little screen will be there when you get home or back to the Office. This is how people get DEAD!, Mugged, Assaulted, Raped! Pay Attention please. We are only down here a short time (don’t make it unnecessarily shorter)

While we aren’t the USPS “not rain or snow blah blah”

I have been out delivering in Colorado blizzards, literally feet of snow on the ground more falling, sideways in the wind.

Also delivered through the 2013 floods, fording 2-4 foot deep water between certain stops, and following a lifted jeep out of the LAST open road out of Boulder Colorado, literally SECONDS before the county police closed that road because of the deep water flowing across it. 2-3 feet deep and flowing!

Of course, the blizzards were expected, and I had gear enough to survive it,… plus being in a major city makes it actually kind of fun!

Nothing like breaking trail through 1-2 feet of snow in a 8 ton delivery van with full chains on!!! :smiling_imp::smiling_imp::smiling_imp:

When you’re accustomed to certain extreme weather, you can get complacent with it.

The floods though, that wasn’t expected, and I couldn’t get to almost half my residential deliveries that day just because they were almost completely submerged!

The flooding was actually pretty scary! Mostly being concerned for all the people I knew that lived in harms way that day, but also just being aware that if I float that big brown van, I wouldn’t stand a chance against that water! (And I’m a competent swimmer!)

I had a coworker witness this happen at a rail yard, she was waiting to turn into the yard with her own trailer, but a pedestrian on her phone walked out into the intersection right in between the cab and trailer of a semi making a left hand turn.

The pedestrian didn’t immediately die, the wheels basically rolled over her pelvis and waist, effectively cutting her in half.

My coworker held this poor idiot as she passed,… ■■■■■■ my friend up for a long time.
