China releases 3 ‘wrongfully detained’ Americans, White House says

China is releasing three Americans Wednesday who the White House says were “wrongfully detained,” Fox News has confirmed.
“We are pleased to announce the release of Mark Swidan, Kai Li, and John Leung from detention in the People’s Republic of China,” a National Security Council spokesperson said. “Soon they will return and be reunited with their families for the first time in many years. Thanks to this Administration’s efforts and diplomacy with the PRC, all of the wrongfully detained Americans in the PRC are home.”
Mark Swidan of Texas was 38-years old when he went to China on business looking for flooring for construction work in November 2012. He was arrested after his driver and translator were allegedly found with drugs, the Texas Tribune has reported.
A United Nations report determined that Swidan was not in possession of drugs on his person or in his hotel room, and records show he was not in China at the time of the alleged offense.

Cancer patients hit with Ulez fines

Cancer sufferers are being hit with Ulez charges despite Sadiq Khan’s promise to exempt hospital patients from the levy.
A carve out of London’s ultra-low emission zone agreed the charge would not apply to some of those attending hospital appointments.
Those travelling by car can apply for a refund of the £12.50 daily charge, and the £15 Congestion Charge, if necessary.
But as many as three in five do not know that they are exempt while others are struggling to get their money back, a cancer charity has warned.
King’s College, a hospital in south-east London, said that it had seen instances of patients struggling to get refunds since spring of this year.
A spokesman for the hospital said: “We have continued to submit monthly claims to Transport for London (TfL) for patients eligible for Ulez reimbursement. However, since the spring 2024, we have experienced difficulty in getting some claims processed. We have raised this with the TfL complaints team.”
Hundreds of large and small hospitals were dragged into the Ulez net after the Mayor of London expanded the scheme last summer.
But patients who are too weak or disabled to travel by public transport, or suffer from other issues and require regular treatment can get the charge refunded, TfL’s terms state.
