Gun safe in your car?

You cannot remove the firearm from your vehicle, @Arthur1. I would avoid spending the night in IL if at all possible.

Rats! I’ve been bad. It is a very advantageous half way point for us, but I’ll have to do more homework on Belot maybe Janesville.

You are not required to unload the gun when leaving the car in Illinois IF you have a concealed carry permit. The vehicle must be locked, or the gun in a locked container, as well as NO other occupant is left in the car while you go to the restroom, etc… Make damn sure you lock your door because I have heard of LE walking up to out of state cars and pulling on the door latch. If the door opens and you are carrying a gun in an unattended vehicle your “screwed” when you return.

I do travel through IL often and carry without exception while driving (AIWB).

This is unlike those traveling through IL without a permit. Those guns MUST always be unloaded and out of reach, completely and always.

Thanks for your post, going to look up that lockbox. When I enter the medical center for appt’s I usually stash my EDC but with the drug users breaking into vehicles for stuff to steal & sell for their “fix” I feel it necessary to get a lockable container and the cable idea sounds great, thanks

Yeah, I purchased a portable gun safe with a cable, but seeing there were people bolting the safe to the car made me think I might do that, too. I’m concerned how quickly a cable can be cut with a battery operated tool with a cutting wheel attached.

I just got back to Memphis from Chicago. Illinois will honor your carry permit as long as you’re in your car. When I stopped for a gas and a snack in Effingham, I had to lock my weapon in my Hornady Alpha Elite lock box.

I’m just not to the point where I trust electronic lock boxes yet…but I’m considering the Hornady “RAPiD Safe Night Guard RFID Pistol Safe” for my nightsand. It also has an access code and a key to unlock it.

I have a console vault in one of my vehicles and I absolutely love it for when I have to leave “stuff” in the vehicle. My question is what if anything is done for those who have a corvette? Not many places to hide stuff there! Is it similar to a camaro?

We have three safes. All Vaultek. Large MXE in master bedroom closet. Vaultek Lifepro for wife’s S&W 9mm EZ. Vaultek Essential for my Sid 320 X5 Legion, three magazines, S&woodwin16@icloud.com 642 and speedloaders.

When not in carry states, we go back to Illinois from Florida several times a year, I put both under floor in back of Acura SUV. We keep them in small, pull behind suitcase when checking into hotel. Same case when flying back.

I keep my 642 in Lifepro in laundry room just outside of garage. This is my EDC And this location makes for quick retrieval/ storage going and coming in car.

If you come thru South Carolina it has to be in a factory glove box with a latch, it does not have to lock. No gun boxes under the seat, home made or otherwise

Is that right? So you’re saying that I can legally carry a gun in Illinois as long as it stays in my vehicle? So if I’m driving in Illinois and the gun is beside my leg (which is where it always is when I’m driving) you’re saying it’s legal, as long as I don’t get out of the vehicle with it?

As long as you have a current CCL from your home state of record the answer is yes.

Now if you exit the vehicle for any reason it much be secured according to Illinois state law. This includes pumping gas, and is why I avoid the state of Illinois when I am on my bike. While I do have a way to secure the firearm, because others could see me remove it from the holster to put it in a gun safe attached to my bike, it would be considered banishing (if someone reported it).

This does NOT apply in the Greater Chicago area as there are local bans on firearms (this might include all of Cook county but I am unsure). Best bet would be to contact local/state law enforcement to confirm before traveling to the area.

I go to Illinois all the time. So I am glad to hear that. Thank you. And I will look into cook county.

I use the VAULTEK Lifepod, cable locked to the seat post. It has side latches and an electronic combination lock. I unload my Glock 43 and lock both the pistol and magazine in the life pod and slide it under the driver seat. I do feel comfortable with it that way, but I am exploring the possibility of a more permanent lockbox for my jeep.

After reading all of this I got curious soI have looked into it. Your right about carrying a gun in your vehicle in Illinois. So it says,. “as long as you have a CCW from your home state you can have a gun in you vehicle as long as you don’t get out of your car with it. If you get out of your car, your car must be locked or it must be in a lockbox” But I can not find anything about Chicago being any different. Cook county laws all fall back on state laws. I have been researching this very heavily. I can not find anything that says this law is different in Chicago. According to every law I have looked at, They follow Illinois gun laws, the only difference I can find is they have banned certain guns. Chicago lifted the ban of guns 2010 and stated concealed carry in 2013.

So if there is anyone that knows for sure please make a comment because this is a very important question to be answered for me. I transport train crews all over this country. I travel to Chicago all the time. Maybe I should start a discussion up on this.

Justin,

There are a few members here who live in or near Chicago who should be able to shed more light on this. I will admit I am NOT up on the current laws in Chicago and I avoid that city like the plague.

Personally I do not understand why people stay in these places

I use the Vaultek LifePod Colion Noir edition on my nightstand, my truck, a backpack. I use it everywhere.

@Justin47 I live in Cook County, the laws in the county in reference to CC are the same listed in the state. The differences do come into place with magazine capacities and things like AR weapons.

Chicago also falls into that as well. State laws apply to CC, again minor nuances when it comes to volume of ammo and high powered rifles.

The city is a violent place, and during this whole Covid-19 thing, people on the roads have absolutely lost it! Things feel very unpredictable around here, as well I am sure around the country. Stay safe out there and in your travels.
