I think if controlled fusion becomes a reality it will not be cheap. The light isotopes used to fuel it in quantities needed for sustained reactions will not be cheap. Also the amount of energy needed to start the reaction will not be cheap. We will need fission nuclear plants to provide energy for the initial nuclear reactions and production of hydrogen 3 (Tritium.)
