Before Live PD was cancelled by A&E (damn them) , I noticed many, many police departments were using mounted lights. They would often keep the pistol at a low ready, letting the light indirectly illuminate the area in front of them. Many were Surefires and Streamlights.

Totally agree. This was the first thought that clicked in my head when I read this. Carry the light separate so you can check out an area #1 without pointing the gun at someone, and #2 keep your gun pointed at someone while looking for additional threats.
