I have the utmost respect for law enforcement. The unfortunate result of what has been happening with many areas where both citizens and LE leaders are showing outright disdain for officers and folks who would have been good candidates are seeking other opportunities. In response, many agencies are forced to lower their recruitment standards to fill the openings left by retiring officers and attrition by those who have become disillusioned by the system or are moving to agencies where they are being supported.
As soon as the standards are lowered, the bottom starts falling out and it is hard to stop the bleeding.
This is all too close to home as I am watching this happen in Louisville.
The bottom is falling out in Portland, Oregon as well. The recruiting standards have been lowered significantly, and they still can’t fill positions. 118 positions (not sure how many of those are sworn positions) are vacant per my neighbor who is a sworn LEO with the PPB.
