When in the field in the military we did a lot of ā€œfield expedientā€ things like repurposing MRE pouches, heavy thick plastic, came in handy for a lot of different things, and in military colors like dark brown or sand tan, and not objectionablein appearance.

They were used as foot/shoe/boot covers in wet or muddy fields.

Keep anything contained, dry and clean and free from wet, dry mud, sand, dust.

Take your toiletries to and from the shower. Toot or stash your valuables in them. Keep maps or other paperwork useable. Cut them open and use them for a surface cover to clean a gun on, eat on, or use them as cargo pants pocket liners, put your gun in it, M1911, M9, M17 or M18, whatever your era issue was. IFAK Individual First Aid Kit, clean & dry, or any backup supplies, sorted & organized, like Boy Scouts, rolled clothes in sets in ziplock bags in your duffel or sea bags kept all clean and dry if submerged, and trapped enough air so that your duffle or sea bag could be used as a floatation device if you and it got submerged to. Lots of field hacks like that…

Having had the experience of finishing rags left balled up and left over night on the work tables and coming in the net morning to little piles of ashes (spontaneous combustion don’t you know) I want to know what the danger is to my neoprene gun mat rolled up in the closet or my favorite 43 yr old T-shirt with Ballistol on it wrapped around Pop’s 45?

In the kitchen at work, we have microfiber towels, and they are inexpensive as well as they work great.

Danger Ranger! Avoid that’s a possibility!

You could wake-up to a shop, garage, house fire :fire:. Either wash those rags ASAP. Or, leave them opened and smooth out draped over your BBQ Grill outside to air dry over night.

Highly volatile liquids produce heat, and may combust.

(See the link below .)

I recall working in a wood shop that requires all such rags (with oily / solvents) be deposited in a fire department approved air tight, fire proof, metal can, with a step operate lid, and make sure that the lid is closed tight before leaving the area. The metal pail was painted fire engine :fire_engine: red. It was not for other trash. The
Mixing of solvent damp rags in a trash can in a recipe for disaster.

If that fails to prevent spontaneous combustion, the fire will quickly consume the air (oxygen in the a 6 to 10 gallon oily waste can, and smother itself rather than spreading.

Actually, counting mag holders and similar items, I have a drawer for each firearm I own.

Wait just a darn minute here! Are you saying I shouldn’t be putting my guns in the dishwasher anymore?

You can… just don’t forget ā€œsteam & sanitizeā€ cycle.

If your cleaning regimen consist of complete stripping of small parts, a bar mat comes in handy. These are mats with plastic nubs that keep bar glasses elevated out of whatever it is that accumulates during the shift.
The nubs also catch and hold small screws, springs etc… so they don’t bounce off into another time zone.
You can find plain ones in useful sizes at bartender supply outfits or online. If you want one with a logo of your favorite beverage, or even personalized, they’ll have those as well.

You don’t clean your dishes? Gross!

My ex wife never did! Was definitely part of my filing for divorce.

As for a gun cloth, I’m on board with old t-shirts and shop rags.

Carbon fiber towels are cleaner with no lint and they absorb grease and dirt very well.

Carbon fiber anything sounds expensive!

I have bags of red rags for working on my collection of old Toyotas, great for bulk cleaning tho they do leave lint.

And I have plenty of old worn out cotton T’s that work great for finish cleaning!

WHAT? Haven’t you heard about a dishwasher? Turn on the dry function and it comes as dry as a whistle.

Then your dishes are seasoned with Hopps #9!

Love the smell, hate the taste.

Hard pass.
