Church Chaos in Grand Rapids — Seeking Advice

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share a recent experience and get your thoughts and advice. It happened at the Cathedral of Saint Andrew in Grand Rapids, Michigan, during evening Mass on August 17th.

As Mass was ending, a man walked in through the east doors. He was a Black male, about 6 feet tall, late 30s to early 40s, strong build.

At the end of the service, I heard some shouting in the back. I was sitting about ten rows from the back, so I got up to see what was happening. Next thing you know, he was charging toward me and the front of the church. I held my arms out to try to grab his attention and slow him down. He shoved me into a pew, and I hit my back and head, falling on other parishioners.

After that, he ran toward the front, and I immediately got back up to follow him with other parishioners to see what would happen next. I was concealed carrying at the time, so I wanted to limit direct engagement. Along with myself, several other men got up to stand in front of him, trying to guide him out.

The man was shouting incoherent things, including statements like “you’re stealing from my kingdom,” while growling, cursing, grunting, and lunging at parishioners, as if he was trying to provoke people into fighting him. His behavior was unpredictable and uncontrollable — he could not be reasoned with. We eventually corralled him to the front, and when he reached the front doors, he shoved another person down the outside steps, causing that parishioner to tumble.

At that point, we decided it was enough and restrained him — one man got on his back and held him in a rear hold, while two to three others pinned his legs and body until police arrived. The entire incident lasted roughly 6 to 9 minutes.

Thankfully, nobody was seriously injured, and no property was damaged.

In light of this event, men in my diocese are trying to wake others up to train and protect our local churches. Being present at the cathedral and seeing the risk profile in a busy downtown area, it’s something I had always anticipated could happen. Thank God he wasn’t armed. It sounds like he’s a repeat offender; the officers who arrived even knew him by first name. When I think about the tragic shooting at a Catholic school and church in Minnesota, it’s a sobering reminder of how much worse situations like this can become.

I’d love input from the USCCA community, especially for individuals who are concealed carrying:

  • How would you handle someone aggressive and completely out of control but unarmed in a crowded public space? Would you wait until they actually hurt someone else, especially in a church setting?

  • Does it make sense to keep your distance and observe while unarmed individuals intervene first?

  • Are there tactics or best practices for keeping yourself and others safe in situations like this? Do you physically intervene? Do you carry pepper spray?

  • How do you balance protecting others while avoiding escalating the situation yourself?

I’d really like to hear your experiences, advice, and recommendations. How would you handle something like this if it happened in your community?

My first step is to determine if he is armed. If he is not I put myself between him and any parishioners he may harm. The rest should have to be determined by what his reactions were. It seems like you all kept your heads and handled it in a good manner. Good job.

Very interesting post. It’s amazing no one got hurt, thanks to all of you. Sadly, some of us in society do have such mental crises or breakdowns like he did.

I recently attended a free in person seminar on such safety. Immediately, I felt I was among friends.

It was a two-part series, the first focusing within churches, the second for the general population or office work; mainly “Active shooter scenarios”.

My main personal take away was just how much more one can learn, just by being on a church safety team, if they go about best education and training:

The USCCA has a lot. However, there is Christian Warrior Training that deals solely with church’s and church security. Now, on the other side, we need to fix our system about who’s running around free. If the Police knew him by first name I can’t help but wonder why he’s on the streets in the first place. If it was that violent a single shove causing a fall into a wooden pew could break a neck. I’m always amazed at the left wanting our guns because of what we may do, yet they let animals like this who obviously have issues and a rap sheet to prove it to run loose like a mad dog looking for it’s next victim.

carry pepper spray, or a Byrna. You could even consider getting a Taser type product, if legal in your area. (Even IL does allow CCW holders to have some Taser type devices.)

for an incident like this spray is the right way to go

at the old church we had Bear Spray at different locations

hidden so the kiddos didn’t have access to it

Bear Spray is more available up here in the UP of Michigan

There are many different ways to handle your situation. I would recommend getting training from a pro on what to do. As for what I would have done. I would have had someone call 911 and only if he got physical with myself or someone then I would have taken him down and held him until the Police showed up. Being armed does not matter as long as you don’t pull your weapon. But I am trained and by the sound of it y’all did a good job.

I work in Grand Rapids but live in Muskegon county. My wife asks me why I carry? This weekend 3 were shot on the highway in GR ( im sure their is a back story) and then this. Pretty bad when you cant even go to church.

GR is a shithole. Some areas are nice, but you better keep your head on a swivel

Have you guys seen this show? “All Access PD: Grand Rapids” It is a different look at a city’s police force. A buddy of mine in law enforcement said it has really good access for a TV show. Sounds like the guy has mental issues. Hey Don or Ron, were you in Grand Rapids on Sunday?

Where are the Epstein files…

GRPD does a good job but just like most, understaffed and more of a reactionary force.

It looks like the situation was handled correctly. 911 was called and the suspect was subdued with no one being seriously hurt or injured. I also recommend Christian Warrior Training as brother @Robert1025 suggested.

Thanks brother! I am meeting with a few other men on our security team and our pastor to implement this into our parish and look at our options. The Cathedral isn’t where I normally go but my main parish is not too far and shares a similar risk profile in terms of lots of random people walking by.

Good for you, the sacred place where we sometimes bring our babies to baptize, bring our beloved to - to marry, and where we memorialize them when they die.

Apologies, I did not tread replies before writing this….

I’m a church and parochial school safety volunteer…. Been doing it 3.5 years.

What stands out to me from the get go is, an armed person got in….

Doors should be locked and monitored until after the church empties, and the priest is safely out.

3 things needed for a crime = means, motive and OPPORTUNITY.

Remove opportunities by locking down at beginning of mass.

This is all I have. I’m very sorry to know this happened.

I’m unsure of your state laws, but if an armed bad guy comes shooting, he’d be shot where I serve.

as you describe, he was past any chance of escalation, was a verified deadly threat, and use of lethal force may have been legal.

We work with local LE to clarify such things. You can contact them for suggestions and go create a safety team and plan.

God bless!

I hear you. At my work place, the Security department is offering the Run, Hide, Fight class.

At my job, we are not allowed to have certain items as defensive tools. I was doing some cleaning in our office a couple of days ago and found a six foot long heavy metal pole. I cleaned it and stashed it behind my cabinet at work.

No wonder church patrons are unique, as it’s a tightly packed group with little concealment, no cover. All the more reason to prepare.

Best to you.

many do not fully understand where America was actually born… or why we have the rights we have…

I can not express well enough that this explains so much of the history and reasons behind it all…

right now it’s 4.99 or 5.99 to buy… or watch on youtube…

watch any of these or even buy it on amazon I do not think you will regret the purchase!!!

it tells you why our ancestors rebelled and fought… Obey God and resist tyranny!!!

or Obey God and defy tyrants!

At almost 3 hours each, it’s going to take awhile to watch these, considering my short attention span. But I do intend to.

I like your last line .

Obey God and defy tyrants

later generations don’t seem to have a clue… but our education system went indoctrination system…

we need to take it back or we will lose what we have… telling them what they will lose…

bringing back civic may be a good start

doesn’t seem to sink in… maybe make em watch this or some such???

It only makes em more resistant. We cannot bring someone to G-d. G-d has to find them. G-d bless you for trying.
