Yes, I meant Bad Guy. I wasn’t military, so Tango isn’t part of my lingo but I’m learning! The “Big Guy” is an existential threat to all of America, a Bad Guy is an imminent threat more locally.
Understood, thanks.
W=Whisky
T=Tango
F=Foxtrot
Is just an international and NATO way of phonetically spelling out alphabetic letters to avoid mistakes especially with similar sounding letters like D & E on a radio transmission are given Delta & Echo for instance. You can assign any meaning to an initial letter and then just transmit it by that and it’s meaning is generally known by the context of the transmission of the message, or looked up in a cypher code book, some of those are just once and done, or daily.
So, if compromised are meaningless past the period they were issued for.
For instance: WTF?
Has an enduring meaning of:
“What The F-(fornication)?”
And within a Tango Alpha, TA: (Target Acquisition spotter report is a Tango = Target, or Terrorist; same difference.
Once a “Tango” is identified, and transmitted, it has a short life expectancy, once the snippets gets a bead on them. The tango usually is dispatched in a pink spray soon thereafter.
Above is the whole NATO phonetic alphabet chart:
So if I were spelling out my name Frank
To be sure it was correctly understood… I would say:
Foxtrot, Alpha, Romeo, November, Kilo.
Or, if asking WTF? Say: Whisky, Tango, Foxtrot.
One of the handiest uses is giving alpha numeric map coordinates:
With their letters spoken in the military or International Phonetic Alphabet so as not to be confused.
Which, is critical when requesting a S&R Search & Rescue mission,
an Extraction of anyone especially from behind enemy lines,
or an artillery, or bomb strike that you what on target to be effective, and not have any negligent collateral damage.
That same phonetic alphabet also has a civilian transportation application used by airline pilots, and ship captains for the same purpose of clarity in communications.
One other application is military time zones so as not to be misunderstood that any specific local time zone is the local time I’m any-other time zone. There for operations orders are given in the Zulu Military Time Zone and then if need be, converted to any given time zone. Example is anything thing scheduled is given in UTC Grenache Mean Time regardless of where it is occurring. Say in the Middle East, if someone monitoring that operation from the Pentagon in the Eastern Time Zone Shanta to know when some event is kicking off, they can convert from Zulu Time to ET.
If different elements, or units are coordinating from different time zones then they can do the same, and every one is on the same schedule without juxtaposition of different local time zones being mistaken for the operational time zone which, might be completely different than any other zone involved launching assets coordinated from widely different locations, like different countries, or different oceans for example.
That would be interesting… how many bottles does it take to convert to that time zone? I like some grenache, but it usually isn’t heavy enough for my palate.
One last note on the phonetic alphabet is time zone designations: (also for clarity). Since, most international transportation and military operations span multiple time zones, one needs to perfectly clear.
… but not the wine, the darker the better.
I’ve been out of the military for 30+ years. I still spell using military phonetics, and write in all capitals, even though I do know cursive. You can take the man out of the military but you can’t take the military out of the man. Btw
Foxtrot, Romeo, Alpha, November, Kilo.
I will hoist a glass to that!
Yes, I like Scotch, too. Drinking a really nice 15-year old Blair Athol right now. Single malt, single cask, cask strength, 57.4% and easy to drink. I often add a few drops of water as I taste cask-strength Scotch to experience the various flavors that open-up, but not to this one. it is amazing as it is.
Ooh, night cap coming on!

According to a large recent study on defensive gun use, 1.6 million incidents, in 82% of those cases, no shots were fired. That tells me that the vast majority of cases, the gun is drawn (legally brandished?) and stops the threat without shots.
Not brandished. If there is a threat in which use of lethal force is “allowed”, drawing your handgun. or anything else one might do with one, in defense of self, is not brandishing, it is justified self-defense.
I think you are going to have to draw a picture.
