When you reach a certain vintage in life, joint replacements become a reality. I now have 2 metal knees and hip. With each operation, you will be asked “Are you OK with transfusions if necessary to save your life?” I looked into banking my own blood and my surgeon advised against it as it introduces the potential for more clerical error. As he explained it, my blood, would be drawn and processed at a different facility, then shipped to the hospital where my surgery takes place can be mislabeled or mixed up with someone else’s blood. I did not want to know how he knew that was a possibility.
