I made the mistake of selling my 92FS when I left the US but since I got back, I’ve been jonesing about getting another one or getting the M9. The differences are minor but I’d like to hear comments from anyone who has or has had both.
I love the Beretta 92FS, and had one in my hand comparing it to the Sig P320 trying to decide which one to buy and walked out the store
with the Sig P320
Love all of my FSs. I actually sold my only M9!
I joined the military in the late 1970s. I always qualified expert with the 1911.
In the 1990s I started a position that required me to qualify with the M9. I never did care for that weapon. The trigger oull always seemed long, heavy, and coarse.
Isn’t the M9 just a military version of the 92FS?
Yeah, I think the civilian model came out after the M9 won the army contract. I had to carrry the Glock 17 as a duty weapon as a fed and I didn’t like it after being used to the M9. I agree about the heavy pull but once you got past that the single action suited me and the grip fit in my hand like it was custom made
There are a LOT of version of each, then there modifications, so the world is your oyster.
I suspect you will like any/all of them…but know that you won’t end up with just one!
I carried a Beretta 92SF, 9 mm, as a duty weapon for years, until our department decided to issue duty weapons for uniformity. They issued Sig P-229s in 40 cal. . I sold the Beretta (big mistake) and after retiring, I purchased a Sig P-229. Both were fine sidearms.
I have never owned a 92FS. I do currently carry a 92A1. Back in the day I did own one of the original M9’s, but like you, I made the mistake of selling it. I had met a girl, wanted to get married, needed money for a ring, so I sold it to a friend with the promise he would sell it back if I ever asked. married the girl, friend didn’t resell the pistol to me, divorced the girl, lost the ring, pistol was gone…WO was me.
Fast forward and I have a new girl. I had, like you, been jonesing for another Beretta, but which one? There were so many to choose from. Money was not an object (at that time) so I decided on the 92A1. Minor differences from all the other 90 and 92 series pistols on the market. I chose the 92A1 for the simple facts it was produced in Italy, not the US, and it has the serial number in three locations on the weapon: Frame, slide and barrel. When I wrapped my fingers around the pistol, it was like shaking hands with an old friend.
The only REAL differences between this one and the M9 I had are an extra two rounds per magazine and a pic rail on the bottom of the frame.
I remember when I bought the M9 so many years ago it came ziptied in a cardboard box with one magazine. The 92A1 came in a molded plastic case with three magazines.
She has been my daily traveling companion since the day I picked her up.
92 FS all day long.
I have an M9 (civilian). I bought it remembering a good range session I had with a 92. As much as I like the M9, I should have bought the 92. Here’s why…
The biggest difference is the cutout at the back of the back strap. The M9 felt a tiny bit more comfortable in the store, but almost unnoticeable when shooting except for one thing: slightly less trigger reach on the 92 because of that cutout. There’s no aftermarket option that will give you those precious mm’s shorter trigger reach when shooting double action.
I wear large size gloves and I wish the trigger on my M9 was a tad shorter in double action… you know… the first shot which many consider one of the most important. That being said, I modified my M9 in other ways that I am happy with. The biggest difference was from putting in a 13lbs hammer spring (use the 14 or 15 lbs if you are planning on shooting 9mm NATO).
13/14/15 lbs hammer spring kit was bought from Langdon Tactical for pretty cheap.
Thank you. That’s exactly the kind of information I was looking for.
