Ayoob and Wilson on the 1911

I love my 1911. A time tested masterpiece. Would I carry it CCW? Nope. Too big, condition 1, heavy, mag capacity, has a manual safety, etc., makes me reach for something better and safer for CCW. I still take my 1911 to the range almost every time I go…

Every now and again I carry it in a lag kydex holster I reheated the holster and shoved the 1911 in it to form it up and true to form like a glove.

I’ll conceal carry my 1911when I can wear and conceal an OWB holster, otherwise it’s the Centennial.
I find my 1911 comfortable to carry, but does require a real gun belt (FWIW mine are Hank’s Belts)
and a darned good holster. Due to back issues I no longer carry IWB.

What specifically did it change about your view of the 1911 in regards to carrying it?

He points out several safety factors of the 1911 that could possibly allow you critical additional time that could save your life, especially if confronted by someone unfamiliar with 1911 platforms. I carry mine comfortably and, so far, am unaware that anyone has observed this going by the lack of reaction when interacting with others. I particularly like his solution as to how to proceed in the event that the gun is taken out of battery in a close contact situation.

Beautiful piece of craftmanship!

It took from start to finish 7 days but spread out over a month when things got strained I stopped and went back at it. Get all your parts first then assemble or dry fit parts they should be tight but not binding lube should cushion the action use a frame with milled slide rails. Most come with more material so use metal polish to mate the frame to the slide not honing paste ( steel to aluminum frame ). For steel on steel use honing paste get the highest quality barrel you can afford and don’t cheap out on internal parts Wilson , Ed brown , klonimus Springfield and so on I tried to use the best working stuff I could afford at the time. It will be the love of your life if you build it so take your time areas of concern. Trigger while it’s cute to have a two pound trigger with a super short reset it is UNSAFE as it’s a hair trigger and can follow the slide home during the recoil stroke so if tempted refrain. Sights know what kind of sights go with what slide I’m sending my slide out to have this service redone. I’m impressed with the mechanical accuracy just not the material itself. I feel that the quality of this build deserves a better set of sights. Magazines sig magazines are good so is Wilson combat metal follower all metal construction. Don’t skimp on this. I went with 70 series because of less moving parts . Plus I’m a slight purist when it comes to the slide the Ed brown A2 slide I acquired takes a 9 mm not a 45 acp firing pin a move a lot of manufacturers are moving to. Little things like tight lockup and barrel link size don’t take on tasks that will be too far over your head and prepare build some armalite rifles or a couple 80% pistols where permitted by law polish the rails on your Glock or beretta close your eyes and feel the action as you cycle it any other questions feel free
