I think the least that LGS can do is hand them this and have them read it at the time of purchase.
Just my $1.25
Explaination: I just donât want this article to turn into a 2A or government mandate discussion.
Being polite and respectful to these new firearm owners first of all is the most important.
If you feel your perception towards these people is correct and they may want to talk, then try and talk to them. Most of all also, "Listen ".
Safety is my most concern, the four first rules, then the knowledge of handling their specific type of firearm.
In terms of new gun owners getting necessary training,
looking at the past,
we donât need rosy colored glasses.
It was indeed better in the good old days.
Inevitably, discussions become political because the old-timers know the infringement that transpired.
These hang on every wall at Ranges in my location. But it is not enough. I actually doubt if people buying their first firearm understand meaning of those rules.
Better than nothing, but without instructions, these are words only.
Unfortunately our âpastâ is gone.
We need to adjust to current standards which are way different than years agoâŠ
I personally cannot help all new shooters buying their first firearms⊠but Iâve been able to provide knowledge to every person who asked me for such help.
It maybe nothing, small scale, but hundreds / thousands / millions small things like mine makes it a huge scale.
We can discuss this problem here, but without action, even small⊠it will be still only discussionâŠ
We have a huge amount of Instructors here, so I hope each of us can provide some basic knowledge to at least one person.
We have new shooters signing to this Community almost every day, so definitely we can use this platform to help them understand firearms basics and safety.
I like the pictures. Followed by the message. Most people ignore wordy documents and message boards but if you put large, entertaining and informative pictures in front of people you can often get them to read a brief message as well.
Designing the handouts to be interesting and effective would be key.
Youâre never gonna get everyone to pay attention to the message. But if done right you can pull in a fair percentage. I know I could have very much used someone pointing me towards some proper training when I first started out. Instead I had to struggle to figure it all out on my own. I was very fortunate in that I was willing and able to put the time and effort into finding an instructor and lucky that instructor ended up being a really good one.
Where there is a deficiency, there is opportunity. Talk to these folks and offer to teach them at a reasonable price. Get enough folks, it could be worth yoru time.
Be careful what you wish for. Some of the opposition will hear it and a bill will be presented requiring that persons buying a weapon must get training in its use and pass an ability test before the gun can be purchased.
And in the same Bill making it illegal to train with another person.
And also making the test impossible for most (or all?) to actually pass.
Imagine if the test was the federal air marshal test and had to be done immediately after running 400 meters in 65 seconds or less.
Because you know plenty of folks would support that as âcommon senseâ and âfor safetyâ
Give them 0.355" and they will take 10 nautical miles
And that would be easy to implement in Illinois.
We have 72 hrs waiting time between purchasing and picking up the firearm from FFL⊠that means thereâs a planty of time for basic training.
No training certificate⊠no picking up.
opposition⊠please donât read it
72 hour waitâŠtalk about a blatantly unconstitutional law.
No training certificate after completion? Would you be required to attain that basic training every time? Or would you get something certifying you had completed it before that you could present next time to get out of it?
Who would provide the training, who would pay for the training, how long would it take, what would the mandated curriculum be, would there be a live fire test to pass and if so what would it be?
What about private transfers/sales between individuals and not from a store?
NO gun control please and thank you
This my friend is the problem. Someone mentioned earlier that they learned gun safety in grade school in the 50âs or 60âs.
This is where gun safety should be mandatory.
What ever happened to Health and Safety class? H&S class should be taught in grade school, and in High School.
Health---- How to eat to achieve your vitamin requirements, Washing hands to not spread germs etc. etc.
Safety---- To look before crossing the street (not at your phone), To be attentive to your surroundings. etc., etc.
Firearm safety could and should be a part of âSafetyâ. There are what, 400 million guns in our country? Children need to learn at an early age about âgun safetyâ. The 4 safety rules should be common knowledge in the earliest school years. respect of firearms and what they can do also. How to safely secure and store firearms. what to do if you find a firearm laying some where. Hunting clubs in high school should be brought back.
Parents and Teachers should emphasize that problems and quarrels are not solvable with a gun. Country schools and city schools.
Movies should not be allowed that show problems solved with a gun. How about some accountability in hollywood? How about actors (court jesters),learn how to pick up and hold a gun (4 safety rules)? How about they learn to drive a car also?
If gun safety and respect for guns was taught early on, we wouldnât need to worry about newbies at the firearm shop, or at gun shows.
But back to the original topic, I would offer guidance to new gun owners especially the 4 rules of gun safety. How to hold the firearm, and how to stand so as not to be knocked off balance when firing.
And then to refer them to the USCCA.
Short answers, otherwise I will have to apologize to @William377 againâŠ
As we already established, this would apply to first time gun purchase.
If one of the clerks would be willing to become Firearm Instructor, thereâs no cost.
We were also discussing possibility of USCCA being a sponsor for such basic classes.
All these above were already posted, so why ask same questions over and over?
Apologies if I canât find it but I donât see answers to all of those questions above.
Thatâs okay. I think we all know Iâm going to stand fast on the âno gun controlâ regardless of the answers for how it will be implemented l
Kalifornia: âHold my beer.â
William 377, I would walk up to them at the counter and say something like â Hi, excuse me, I overheard your questions and safety and responsible gun ownewrship is everyoneâs concern. Iâm a certified instructor and I would be happy to help you out. Letâs schedule some time to meet at the range and I would love to get you started on a solid foundation. If youâre not sure about using my services, let me put you in contact with another certified instructor.â then I would hand the purchasers and the salesperson my business card and see where the conversation goes.
It wonât happen.
The problem is that jumping into conversation between buyer and clerk is not a professional at all.
Something like this (firearm basic training) should come from clerks or the buyer.
If the store would have anything like âwe offer basic training for new shootersâ info, that might bring attention to a buyer.
Yeah itâs a tough spot.
I know a lot of us end up knowing (thinking we know, or actually knowing) more and better than counter employees, but, holding your tongue in another personâs business is more the societal expectation.
Middle ground is to try to catch them in a more personal 1:1 situation, separate from the store interaction, afterwards.
But even then, to me it [almost] always feels awkward when a random stranger approaches like that. Guard automatically up
Ill take my dangerous freedom over your peaceful slavery any day. The 2nd says what the 2nd says. I did 22 federal background checks in 1 year. Why? you think youâre going to magically find something on the 23rd background check that wasnât on the first 22? What about all the tax stamps background checks? You think a piece of paper shows competence? They thought that with boatersâ licensees as well, but they are the easiest licenses on the planet to get and donât prove â â â â . Firearms training used to be in every school system. There are still quite a few schools that have shooting clubs. We solve this by removing the public stigma that has been forced on firearms. Firearms are just tools, just like a hammer. We donât demonize hammers; we teach kids how to use them in shop class. Propper use, and etiquette, proper training. Proper mental state. THIS STARTS IN THE HOME and is just continued in schools. teach your children what they should know before society teaches them what THEY want them to know.

as for random strangers in a gun shop. If youâre an instructor, slip them a card. Donât be a dick, donât interrupt the salesman, be polite, offer your services as they are waiting on their background check in a casual way, and then go about your business. if they are interested, they might take you up on it. They may already have someone else in mind to teach them. Whether that person knows what they are doing or not is out of my control, and I do not feel the need to try and tyrannically impose my will on others lives, even in pearl clutching moments.
