What could have happened? A man could have gotten murdered and he did. One can not kill a man because of what could have happened. There has to be imminent threat of death or grave bodily harm.

I didn’t read anything about someone being murdered I read a armed man didn’t comply with LEO request to put his weapon down and answer questions shame on him but lets see what the investigation turns out.

Good point. I should have stated it is my opinion. I was referring to the deputy sheriffs murdering him. They are anti-gun and are using fear as their excuse. Again, my opinion. There is a fine line between exercising our second amendment right and being a deadly threat. I think it is a good topic for discussion. Thanks for the reply.

Interesting story to say the least…as with all stories there will be more details to come with time. Granted, most details seem to be here but I’m sure there will be more details. Also, I have a feeling that no LEO gets up in the morning and decides on a situation like this to have in their day ( I know my sons don’t/both LEO’s). They are trained for this and have protocol. They also have to make a decision whether to neutralize a threat or allow it to become something bigger. Either way they get the attention (good or bad). A lot to unpack on this one for sure especially if he’s known to the local PD.

Just FYI for people following the story, it is only legal to open carry a rifle in Florida if one is actively engaged in hunting or fishing, or going to or from hunting or fishing.

There used to be a guy locally who would go fishing with AR15 on his back, to raise awareness of Constitutional Rights.

There is gotta be a better way to exercise one’s Constitutional Rights in a big city than don body armor, hold rifle at low-ready, and argue with cops when they arrive.

But what is a Civilian supposed to do when he encounters a person who looks like he is coming to commit a mass murder, and cops are not in sight? Remember Elija Dickens? Is he a murderer too? I mean, he shot a human being 10 times from 40 yards, just making assumptions about what could have happened.

Not to steer the general discussion, the article mentions this guy acting bizzarely about the neighbors, trying to coerce a child to open a door. He was a psycho, and even if responding officers had no knowledge of his identity and mental state, it is good they neutralized him. It would be better to lock him up in an institution, but the circumstances left cops no alternatives.

I do agree he was not right in the head. I don’t think low ready is a reason to fire. I do believe tensions were high. I hope I would wait for him to turn and attempt a shot before I would fire. I would definitely have him in my sites with my finger off the trigger.

Was it a case of a citizen exercising his 2A rights or something more sinister?

I’m siding with LE on this one.

If I saw the same guy approaching my front door (office or home), I would call 911 while getting ready to defend myself from harm. L

Robert, I am in awe of your skills. Aim a 9mm subcompact at a guy in body armor and rifle at low ready, then talk to him - Davie Crockett and Alvin York have nothing on you.

The article only states that the suspect didn’t comply with orders to drop his weapon; there was no mention of arguing.

> [@Alexander8](#):
>

Elijah Dickens shot a man who was actively shooting people in a crowded mall. No assuming necessary.

> [@Alexander8](#):
>

That’s a definitive diagnosis without sufficient evidence.

> [@Alexander8](#):
>

The circumstances, as described in the article, did not mention any direct threat to the officers themselves or the public in general. There was nothing reported which indicated the suspect needed to be ‘neutralized’ for any specific threat. At best there was probable cause to stop and talk with him.

You and I couldn’t get away with shooting/killing someone just because they ‘looked like’ they might do something bad. LE shouldn’t either.

> [@BeanCounter](#):

Very prudent, but in this case he wasn’t approaching anyone’s front door so far as we know.

No doubt there will be additional details of this incident reported in the near future. I certainly hope the LEO’s had more justification for their use of force beyond what was reported in this article. Until those details are made public I’ll reserve my judgement on all parties concerned.

Not I!. I see a man in armor and a rifle at low ready in the middle of the city

1. I acknowledge he is up to no good with 0 doubt
2. I acknowledge he outguns me
3. I take cover and exfiltrate

You are on your own, sorry. Hope you are right and he is going fishing or shopping at Walmart or something.

I think the argument to that is, if he was going to shoot somebody, he would’ve done it by now.

He was walking… towards his target?

> Responding deputies say they gave Morin multiple commands to drop his weapon, but he did not comply. Three deputies then shot Morin

One one thousand: Drop your weapon!
Two one thousand: (_Didn’t drop his weapon_).
Three one thousand: Bang bang!

Seems like a crucial detail was missing. I doubt it went exactly like that.

That would be a prudent reaction, but that isn’t what we’re talking about. Based only on the information presented in the article, the suspect was not complying with verbal commands but had not yet threatened or initiated violence against the officers or anyone else. Taking cover, calling 911, and/or exfiltrating are all reasonable responses to the situation _as described_. Shooting the man because YOU think he might be going to do something bad is a great way to spend a couple decades in prison.

Let’s all remember that being (legally) armed does not make us LE. We are armed to DEFEND ourselves, our loved ones, and possibly third parties, in the event of an active, immediate threat to our/their lives. We are absolutely NOT empowered to engage against _suspected_ threats.

PS: I always assume that I’m on my own.

I don’t think that’ll hold up in court. That is basically what the sheriff said. That’s basically like what else could he have been doing?

Could have been poor training could have been no training. Not that I’m saying it could’ve been a situation we don’t know about and it was good training. On the video, it seemed like the sheriff was trying to make excuses for himself and the deputy that shot him.

You are of the opinion that police needs to be shot at first, only then they can return fire. Hmm…

I am grasping for reasons this gentleman was dressed up the way he was. Like, maybe there is a movie production going on, and he is Sir Alec Baldwyn? The only other idea is he is a damn mass shoter on his way to wreak havoc. I mean, how much do you expect the cops to dumb down their common sense.
