Am I too picky?

I’m dealing with a guy on ETSY making me a custom leather holster for my step son. All was going good until the picture of the finished work. The price is 375. I was happy until I carefully examined the picture. I’m all for a guy putting his logo or name on a piece of work, but for that kind of money ide expect something that doesn’t look like a three year old did it with an exacto knife. Am I wrong here?

Not saying you’re wrong, but artistic people are, well, artistic

It is my opinion the artist should have put the signature on the back unless prior discussion and agreement with you. It would be a tough decision, but it might end up a no pay if it was me, so no, I do not think you are being too picky.

No, you’re not being too picky. I don’t like how that looks. He should have put that on the back or he should use a small logo tool that is neatly pressed into the leather, not cut in with a razor. What does it say? Can’t read it. “No Rea?”

It clearly says “no rear”… so I think it’s correctly written on the front… :joy:

I agree with ‘JimL’ ! (Oh god I think I have a brain bleed!) :joy:

Looks like a Razor cut afterthought, cheezy. Nice work otherwise.

I don’t think you’re being too picky. I wouldn’t want that on my holster.

One question. Did you look at samples of his work before agreeing to work with him? Did the samples have his mark on them too or not?

No I didn’t see that on any of his other work.

Having been in the art world over 35 years, I’ve seen many a masterpiece turned ugly after the artist signed their work.
On numerous occasions I have had to explain how and where to place their mark.

Some of them look like they haven’t gotten out of grade school. Then again that’s not where their talents lie!

I like to put in an inobvious mistake as a signature in construction work.

Yes if he would have put it anywhere other than glaringly right on the design I would be ok with it. I’m all for signing your work…but for that price hide it somewhere.

He just offered to redo it with his name where ever I want it. The caveat is I pay upfront to prove I won’t back out on him. His work is good and he has a lot of positive reviews with almost no bad ones. After this I’m paranoid to pay up front for anything though.

Maybe compromise and see if he’d let you pay half up front instead of all of it? Just a thought.

Looks like some Spanish crap . But I like the Celtic Cross so much I could overlook the large ID thing on it. IMHO I think it’s to expensive tho but all in all it is a good looking rig.
If the guy was real cool or if you have some kind of guarantee you could tell him that I would like to have it less all the name on it and he should make it for you. One man’s Opinion

Shoddy paint work. But to the leatherworker’s credit, white is not an easy color to get on leather. It does not saturate well and requires at least two coats.

The rest of it looks good. Excellent cutting and tooling. Sharp lines and curves. A few dings and bangs.

Signature is horrendous. But no one will notice it.

I would not have paid that much for ANY holster. But if this were my sort of thing, I’d wear it. Looks great.

Look up Don Gonzales or Bruce Cheany on YouTube. Two of my favs. These cats know how to work some leather.

Not too picky at all.

That’s an obtrusive place to put a makers mark, even a well crafted one.

Nice work otherwise!

As for paying upfront, I totally understand an artist wanting to make sure they are not being ripped off, and that is a lot of work to do, twice, for only one paycheck.

As suggested above, maybe offer 50% upfront for the remake (unless you’ve already paid)

Yeah, make him an offer. If he refuses, he can keep it.

If you are paying full price for a professionally made custom holster, you can be picky! I make holsters and IF I was going to sale them, that one would not be on the market for sale. Too many flaws, uneven and shaky lining job. That is my opinion, especially for 375.00!!!

To me, assuming it’s a commissioned work, the artist can do what ever he/she wants. Does it look cheesy? Yep. Does it detract from the overall work? I dunno…
