Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria - whose assassination led to WWI - was a certifiable sociopath, with an obsessive interest in trophy-hunting. His diaries record 272,511 kills - 5,000 of which were DEER - and he shot everything from elephants to emus during his lifetime. His and other hunting lodges were filled by the 100,00 trophies he had stuffed. At at least one time, he moved down game with a machine-gun! At 29. he went on a massive 'round-the-world trip in 1892 - 1893 to ostensibly recover from tuberculosis, but took every opportunity to indulge his hobby. At home or abroad, he often used two TRAINS on his trips - one was set up as his mobile hunting lodge, with servants as loaders so that he could quickly shoot game as it moved - the other following it had servants responsible for gathering the corpses. At one time, he considered opening a museum to exhibit his trophies.
That seems hard to believe! He was 54 when he was killed. That would mean 13.8 kills per day from the day he was born! 17/day if he started hunting at 10.
It’s DOCUMENTED! He also survived a near-fatal accident in 1913 in England, at a bird-shooting event. One of the loaders stumbled, and touched-off both barrels of a shotgun, barely missing the Duke and his wife. A little to the left, and WWI may have never happened. When Buffalo Bill’s show toured Europe, Kaiser Wilhelm insisted that Annie Oakley shoot a cigarette out of mouth - again, no WWI?
That IS insane. Not likely all personal kills, but still crazy!
He was assassinated by a Serb who still celebrates his assassination today. Ask any Chetnik today what they think about Archduke Franz Ferdinand and they will tell you how proud they were of starting WWI.
