1911 Rock Island vs Tisas

Hi, researching 45ACP 1911’s and I’m ok with basic GI versions, 7 or 8 round magazines, I like both Tisas and Rock Island and I’m on a fixed income, used to own a RIA 1911 10mm but needed snow tires plus it was hard on my arthritic hands.

Thought I’d ask Y’all here for opinions and advice on the 1911 A1 Govt models and Wood Grips are my choice, anyone own either or both brands I’d appreciate the input.

Been losing weight on Wegovy so I’m planning to reward myself with a 1911 and nice leather Holster, and becoming slimmer it will be easier to wear around my waist. I’ve got a Taurus G2C 9mm and it was difficult to find & use a Holster due to the fluff.

Either the 5" barrel or the 4.25" barrel suits me, just concerned about performance and reliability. Ty

RIA full size owner here, no complaints, flawlessly works. I see basic GI models priced competitively

OK I’m a fan of RIA stuff so…

one that seem easy on the recoil is the RIA 22 tcm plus one model also has a 9mm barrel and they make a compact version with 10 round capacity
OOOPSSS the 8rd/10rd well seems they’re discontinued???

If I could open carry, this would be my EDC too.

I have heard many good reports about the current production from Tisas. Came really close to buying their 1911 Commander (4-1/4") in chambered in 9mm, but the budget got blown. --sigh–

At any rate I don’t think you’ll go wrong with eithr one.

My first 1911 was a Tisas Duty model in the metal finish. I love it! It has a good trigger, and has eaten everything I have fed it.

I’ve shot a RI, not a Tisas,

It wasn’t my gun, and only shot it the one session, but it was a nice gun in 9mm!

the .22TCM barrel had issues, failed to extract the casing from the chamber after 4-5 shots… repeatedly….

The casing was stuck to the point of needing a ram rod and mallet from the front to drive it out of the chamber!

Repeatedly, on the 4th or 5th shot is not an ammunition problem in my opinion.

That said, I’ve heard nothing but beaming reviews of the RIA 1911s, and like I said, with the 9mm barrel it was a great gun!

Not my Sig by any means, (top left)

       Colt 1991 .45
    Colt “delta elite” 10mm
Colt MK4 .45 commander

But it’s hard to go wrong with a 1911!

I own one of each size in the Rock Ultra series, all very solid 70 series frames, even the CS 3.25" can shoot 230gr JHP without punishment (looks and sounds like a tank cannon though). The only RIA I would avoid is the “Baby Rock”, it was near impossible to fully load the magazine and the grip safety was so small as to make the gun dangerous.

As stated above I carry a RI eveyday it’s a 45acp probably have run 2k rounds no issues.

My understanding is that Tisas uses more forged parts and might have truer spec to the original Colt. Many reviews rate the Tisas highly.

That being said, RI 1911’s have been on the market for a long time and have generally good reviews. They are made in the Philippines which has an interesting history for retaining some things from WW2 like the 1911.

Both - Tisas and RIA are base level manufacturers. Neither one is better.

The only reason I’d go with RIA is that their basic 1911 models are nothing else than Colt. So still American pistol, just made in Philippines.

Tisas makes clones and it’s 100% Turkish product.

I have an RIA full size 1911 in .45 as my EDC. It shoots flawlessly without misfeeds.

I have my eye on the RIA 1911 .45 14rndr when Ca. magazine limit is finally overturned. And it will be. Then I’ll treat myself.

Congratulations on the weight loss. I used to own a RI 1911. It jammed a lot. I now own a Tisas Stingray .45 cal 1911. It has never jammed. Just my experience.

I have 4 Rock Islands. 45ACP,10mm, 9mm and a double stack 22 TCM. Best bangs for the bucks. All accurate and go bang with each trigger pull.

Rock Island here, in 9mm , no malfunctions.

Glad you mentioned that. That’s the particular model I was planning to make one of my top 3 purchases when the CA handgun roster is declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.
